How do you want to be viewed by other people? How do you want to be remembered when you die? When we ask ourselves that it’s our moral instinct that gets us in trouble sometimes. I feel like the generations now, spends so much time worrying about how others feel about them rather than just doing what they feel they should. It all comes down to reputation, moral intuitions, and sometimes it causes people to do what is referred to as “the bandwagon effect”. We’re becoming followers instead of leader and it is all because were afraid of what the world will think. I know I want to be remembered as someone who spoke my mind, was determined, and didn’t care what people thought of me. I know god made me into the person I am and I’m not changing what he created. So, ask yourself how do you want to be remembered? Firstly, I felt like the most important point made in the text was how we take people’s opinion way to serious. We shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but really look deep into them. Our moral goodness gives us the sense of pride and tells people that we are worthy of being in their life. Although, sometimes we switch to become someone we aren’t and that’s one of the biggest things we do when it comes to our morals. Like stated in the article, “Even when people agree that an outcome is desirable, they may disagree on whether it should be treated as a matter of preference and prudence or as a matter of sin and virtue”. I feel like we only want to be who other people
The fantasy of this moral based society roots itself in the misconception that human differences can be overcome on a large societal scale to generate group approval of a fundamental set of morals. This
People interact with each other on a day to day basis, often times revealing more about who they are about a person and what they believe to be right and wrong. The author of “The Palace Thief”, Canin, strategically uses character interactions to evolve a central idea. Morals are a debatable subject because not everyone has a moral code and not everyone follows their moral code as closely as they think they do. The environment in which people grow up and live in for a long period of time affects how strictly they follow their morals, if some people grow up never following their morals, in the future they also aren’t going to follow their morals. Canin utilizes character interactions to support the overall central idea that whether or not we have a moral code, it is set early on in life.
I can agree with the idea that basing actions on morals can help to ensure that people are not being irrational in their thought processes and that people’s needs are more likely put ahead of individual wants. If morals were not involved, then decisions would most likely be made depending on what would advance the position of that person the most or on other selfish wants. At the same time, without morals being looked at, many lives could be lost because there is no clear way to judge things and come up with an agreement. Without morals, it can be extremely tough to figure out right from wrong and how a group or individual should act.
We are all mortal. Recognising we are mortal puts our lives into perspective. I want to be remembered as a servant of the Lord and as a hard worker. I also want to be known for using my blessings for God’s glory. I have done numerous deeds to accomplish this and plan to continue to do so.
Morals can be defined as concerning or relating to what is right and wrong in human behavior; agreeing with a standard of right behavior. If the country progresses in moral excellence, it will allow us to be stronger and if we can become a united nation we can work towards achieving material excellence. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was a civil rights activist who fought for the rights of minorities as well as the end of discrimination. Niccolo Machiavelli was a writer who took a different approach with his beliefs. Instead of him writing about morals he chose to educate rulers on how to be effective- how to maintain successfully maintain their power. While many in our society value economic progress more than ethical concerns, we should focus
When thinking about morality, it is necessary to consider how aspects from both nature and nurture, along with free will, may form ones moral beliefs and dictate ones moral actions. To understand how moral beliefs as well as actions formulate and operate within individuals and societies, it is imperative that a general definition of morality is laid out. Morality, then, can be defined as ones principles regarding what is right and wrong, good or bad. Although an individual may hold moral beliefs, it is not always the case that moral actions follow. Therefore, in this essay I aim to provide an explanation that clarifies the two and in doing so I also hope to further the notion that one’s moral framework is a product of all three factors; nature, nurture, and free will. The first part of this essay will flush out what exactly morality it and how it manifests similarly across individuals and differently across individuals. Contrariwise, I will then explain how morality manifests similarly across societies and differently across societies. Alongside presenting the information in this order, I will trace morality back to primordial times to showcase how morality has evolved and developed since then, not only from a nature-based standpoint, but also from a
Is Your Limits of Morality out of Place by Alex Prindle In Moral Saints from the Journal of Philosophy by Susan Wolf, the author argues that moral saints are by definition “patient, considerate, even-tempered, hospitable, and charitable in thought as well as in deed”. Wolf also states that moral saints do not care about pleasing themselves, but only in pleasing others. I do not find this definition to be all encompassing of what morality really means. In other words, I disagree with her definition on morality because her definition is too restricted. In this paper, I will explain Susan Wolf’s view on morality, agree with her views that no-one should aspire to be her own definition of a moral saint, but I will disagree with her definition
morality permits each of us a sphere in which to pursue our own plans and goals.
Accordingly, whatever the excellent person finds pleasurable, should be considered the standard for judging individuals moral quality, as stated in the following passage:
People often judge or misperceive others appearances in a less than equal manner before they even know the true nature of the person. Every day we make assumptions by what we can see physically. Even in the supermarkets, we distinguish good products from bad products based on how they look. We are apt to choose good-looking products because they don’t have flaws, cracks, and bruises. Moreover, we assume them to have good qualities and good tastes. Actually, taste doesn’t deal with its looking. However, we bias in favor of assuming human nature. Since people judge human beings based on how they look, it is called prejudice. In fact, prejudice just disadvantage
“The moral is that the shape of a society must depend on the ethical nature of the individual and not on any political system however apparently logical or respectable.”
The age old question of what it means to be human can be answered through many viewpoints. There are several specie specific qualities that differentiate humans from any other creature, but with that being said, humans are often compared and contrasted with animals and machines. Some of these specific qualities are the ability to interpret, free will, and the use of language, but what does it really mean to be human?
I want to be remembered as someone who was easily approachable with anything. With most of my friends, they know that they can talk to me about anything. I want to be remembered as someone who was friendly and someone who could help with any problem. I also want to be remembered as someone who was fun and was never too uptight about anything. I never get too stressed out about anything and whenever I am around friends or family, I always try to have fun. In my legacy, I hope to be remembered as someone
We are born with faculties like we are with passions. “We are not made up of good or bad nature; we are not praised nor blamed”(page 225, Mayfield). This quote is explaining with passions and faculties are how we feel and desire which is neither right nor wrong, good or bad. Since passions and faculties are not defined, state of character is virtue. State of character is our actions and our habits. “The virtue of man also will be the state of character which makes a man good and which makes him do his own work well” (page 225, Mayfield). In order to have true virtue you need to act to “accordance with a golden mean of moderation” (page 78, Palmer). This means that you need to find an intermediate so you will be praised and succeed. You can’t take too much or too little. Too much for someone could be too little for someone else, therefore each person needs to find their own individual mean.
In conclusion, to life a life of morality we must live by the virtues, respond to God's call in our lives, and develop character that resembles a life of virtue. By living out the virtues we become closer disciples of
