Within the United States Constitution, amendments one through ten referred to as the “Bill of Rights” contains amendment two which reads “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (States, 1789). Despite this amendment, gun control still remains one of the most highly-debated issues in the United States. While the Constitution clearly states our right “to keep and bear Arms”, the gun control lobbyists continue to challenge this right by using the media to convey misleading stories on how guns by themselves are the problem. By contrast, the real issues are not the guns but the people who use them. Therefore guns should not be used as …show more content…
Freedom is the structure of our American way of life. The Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) coalition and the Brady Campaign remain the most active political lobbying groups for gun control. Indeed, the issues the Brady Campaign and other gun control groups raise are conceivable. Yes, guns are involved in suicide, crime, and gun violence; and some weak federal gun laws could give evildoers access to guns. And therefore, argues the gun control groups, we need additional laws to restrict access to firearms. However, both the Brady Campaign and The MAIG coalition arguments fail to realize that “We the People” could face a situation that involves us facing a big problem. One big problem could be a pedophile or thief entering homes within your neighborhood. Certainly, a good defense would be the handy-dandy baseball bat. But what if this perpetrator was known to have used a gun in prior incidents? Then would a longer waiting period or more restrictions on the sale of guns make sense? Now, how about the argument about suicide? People are known to have committed suicide without the use of guns. In fact, a study at suicide.org suggests that over 55% of the suicides in the USA were indeed inflicted by means of a gun. Still, this statistic only reflects the tool by which the act was made, because there are other alternatives. And what about the involvement of the black market in
Many tragedies have occurred recently that have spurred the debate on whether or not we need tighter gun controls. On one side of the debate are the gun control supporters, who claim that the easy access to guns is the primary cause for high rates of crime plaguing the United States. On the other side are people who argue that gun laws will not prevent criminals from obtaining guns, since they will continue to get them illegally. Guns are used for protection when in the hands of people who obey the law. It is crucial to not hinder law-abiding citizen’s ability to possess firearms with stricter gun laws, since gun laws do not lower crime, and guns can keep people safe.
In America guns have been a part of the country’s society since it’s birth. Throughout history the citizens of the US have used firearms to protect the nation, protect their families, hunt for food and engage in sporting activities. The issue of Guns and gun control is complex. Weighing the rights and liberties of the individual against the welfare and safety of the public has always been a precarious balancing act. In the United States, gun control is one of these tumultuous issues that has both sides firmly entrenched in their positions. Those parties in favor of gun ownership and the freedom to use and keep arms, rely on the fact that the provision for such rights is enshrined in their constitution. In this climate of
The right to bear arms is a wonderful thing. The law is great for multiple reasons and should not be taken away by Obama. Reason one for the right to bear arms is to be used as self defense in case of an attack by another person. Reason two for the right to bear arms helps citizens to save their own life and live a safe life. Reason three, in order to get a gun the person must go under a background check. Reason four, people are excluded if they have a criminal act against someone. Reason five, this law does not carelessly let a person own a firearm.
Gun control is a very controversial issue among society at present. Many feel guns are the cause of a great amount of crime. This has been an especially popular topic recently in lieu of the shooting at Columbine and other high schools across the country. Are these crimes reason to take away our freedom to bear arms? I do not believe so. The average person uses guns mainly as a means of protection. If limitations are placed on guns, they will only stop the average American from obtaining a gun. The real criminals out there will still be able to obtain guns through the black market. Every American should have the right to protect them self.
Throughout the years there has been an ongoing debate over the Second Amendment and how it should be interpreted. The issue that is being debated is whether our government has the right to regulate guns. The answer of who has which rights lies within how one interprets the Second Amendment. With this being the case, one must also think about what circumstances the Framers were under when this Amendment was written. There are two major sides to this debate, one being the collective side, which feels that the right was given for collective purposes only. This side is in favor of having stricter gun control laws, as they feel that by having stricter laws the number of crimes that are being
The second amendment of The Constitution of the Unites States rules that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” In recent years this has become a highlighted and popular discussion topic throughout people and media. Typical with American media the subject of gun control is visited with broad stroked of red and the use of fear tactics while completely ignoring the complicated and underling positives and negatives of public access to firearms and the benefits and risks associated with this freedom. Most people do not carry a weapon at all and may question others who do because of the moderately low risk of being a victim of a crime. Those how carry however like to think “Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.”
“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” These are the famous words drafted by the founding fathers into the Bill of Rights. This particular amendment has since then been a major part of American culture. Through the second amendment it has given American citizens freedom to buy firearms of any sort: AR-15s, AK-47s, handguns, and the like for self-defense. However, in light of the most recent mass shootings, people have felt that it is time to change if not regulate the freedom the second amendment grants. That is to say that some believe that there needs to be a solution to reduce if not end the gun violence in America by regulating and restricting the access to weapons meant for the police and military by American civilians. Ultimately, the solution to this social problem of gun violence in America is gun control. What is gun control exactly? From an extreme conservative's perspective, gun control is a means of disarming the public and infringing the right the second amendment grants Americans. What this point of view fails to take into account is that gun control is not about infringing on any right or disarming American civilians. It is about restricting the access and sales of deadly firearms to potential felons who have the capability of using them to commit mass murder. Furthermore, what some do not realize is that the second amendment was written in
Ever since 1364 when the first account of a firearm was recorded humans have wanted to control guns. Gun control would eventually travel with Columbus when he first came to America and set up the first colony called Jamestown. And there would be rules regarding weapons on the Mayflower compact.

The right to own a fire arm is a currently a controversial topic in the United States, with many pros and cons to either side. However, it is a constitutional right that the Founding Fathers gave the citizens for a myriad of reasons. By taking away this right from the people, it is a violation of their constitutional rights and limits their freedoms, which goes against everything our country is founded on. One reason why citizens should be allowed to bear arms is that owning a fire arm gives owners protection in the event that an individual intends to do harm. Another reason, is that farmers need guns for their way of life. Lastly, having a gun enables you to defend the country in the event that we are invaded.
Since I was a little girl, I remember hunting season; Dad and Katlyn, my sister, would come home to say they killed a deer. Even though I did not enjoy hunting, I still see how much they love to go; hunting great bonding time for them. My dad taught my sister and me how important gun safety is. He has shown us how to carry a gun properly, never to aim it at anyone, never put our finger on the trigger until ready to shoot, and always leave the safety button on until ready to shoot as well. In my house guns are always hidden or locked up in a safe, only Dad knows the combination, so no intruder can get to them. Guns are a very serious item. I was raised to understand guns are not something to joke around about; if they are in the hands
Currently, one of the most substantial domestic policy controversies is gun safety. As an advocate for gun-control restrictions, Biden said “the nation needs another high-profile, respected spokesman for gun control who is able to convince fearful members of Congress to buck the National Rifle Association and other organizations and vote for firearms restrictions” at the late James Brady’s memorial service. Brady led a campaign to raise awareness about gun violence after being wounded during an assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, named after James Brady, is one of the most significant gun-control restrictions in recent history. Biden said “for too long, members of Congress have been afraid to vote against the wishes of the NRA, even when the vast majority of their constituents support what the NRA opposes”. In his blog article, Biden clarifies the need of increased gun control. Why should individuals argue the need of more guns when recent shootings have identified the need for stricter gun control? During a remark of gun violence, he said the people should have a “moral obligation to diminish senseless gun violence”. When tragedies occur, the nation has to make an effort to prevent future occurrences. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 270 mass shootings in the United States in 2015 alone. This
The right to keep and bear arms was considered a fundamental, individual right in the original 13 colonies from the pre-Revolutionary period through the ratification of the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution in 1791. The Amendment states: A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The right to keep and bear arms has been a topic of extreme controversy in this century and can be argued equally from both sides. The first side says that it is our constitutional right to keep and bear arms. On the flip side, it is too dangerous and would increase the number of violent crimes. No matter which side is
1. “I have the right to bear arms”; “I have the ability to maintain protection in my home from enemy invaders”. These quotes have been heard by many, day-in and day-out, either via media sources or through community members or leaders. Americans have never really educated themselves on what the second amendment is or how it affects our culture. In this paper I will explain the difference between the second amendment and how the American people have perceived this amendment not only by law but what is being portrayed in our nation.
The effects of gun control laws have been extensive and far-reaching though they don’t altogether deter people from acquiring a firearm. The Brady Handgun Control Act made it increasingly more difficult and trying process to purchase and own a gun. Gun control advocates say this is not enough, that although firearm related incidents have declined since its enactment tougher laws are needed or more acts of firearm violence will continue to plague the nation. Pro-gun advocates see gun control laws as only a way for the government to control its citizens. The real debate, for both sides, comes down to who should own a gun and under what restrictions should they be able to possess it?
