Teaching is a very stressful job that many believe is underpaid. There has been a lot of debate over this topic across the united states for many years, especially after a recession hit and a lot of budget cuts were directed towards schools, mainly teachers . Many people believe that teachers teach students who some day become higher paid than them, and that is wrong. They say that considering teachers have our future in their hands that they should have a higher salary and maybe even more health benefits.Others believe that they went into that job knowing the pay so it shouldn’t matter. However; this idea has been shut down by the NEA this idea for some years now. In Washington D.C. a group of teachers in the area tried to force the NEA (national education system) to put forward this idea by not accepting a tenure benefit but their plan to do so was quickly shut down by the NEA. The NEA mainly rejects the idea because they feel that people are putting the teachers before the teaching of the children and the education system. The NEA, being such a powerful program is a major obstacle for those looking to raise teachers salaries (annual adjustment).
In 2007, a recession that lasted mainly until 2012 hit that put many teachers out of a job. This forced schools to make major budget cuts such as increasing class sizes, less upgrades/improvements on the school itself, and even closing some schools that weren’t up to the districts standards. The recession also forced the
Tenure in school systems has been a highly controversial topic lately. Tenure refers to the job security of teachers after they have worked at a certain school for three years. When teachers earn tenure, it is very difficult to take away their jobs. This is especially true in higher education. According to the Washington Post, 32 states grant tenure after three years, nine states grant tenure after four or five years and four states never grant tenure at all. Granting tenure to all teachers gives everybody a job for life which should not be the case. Under-performing teachers should not have definite job security. America should remove academic tenure, replace it with a different system, and re-evaluate school teachers and professors.
Many people wonder if teachers should or should not get paid more than they do. A lot of people believe that teachers should get paid more, but there are some that do not. Parents that want their kids to have a good education want teachers to get paid more. For example, P.V Derkachev said, “… teacher pay influences the quality of education.” (Derkachev 574). Teachers that get payed more would be more likely to perform better at their job and not mind the extra time that they have to do stuff outside of work to get everything done. Matt Barnum said, “Higher salaries --- even small bonuses ---- can and do keep some teachers in the classroom, and likely improve outcomes for their students.” (Barnum). The student is going to get taught better if teachers get paid more because the teacher will want to teach at the best of her ability which will help the student.
High school teachers’ average salary varies across the world. The United States is said to be one of the richest countries in the world, yet our teachers are being paid one of the lowest amounts. The Education Intelligence Agency, author of the article “Ohio Teacher Overcomes Union’s Tolerance” published an International Teacher Salary Report ranking the fifty states by “how much the average salary exceeded per capita personal income.” According to the Education Intelligence Agency Ohio’s percentage rate is only fifty- five point one percent. According to the Education Intelligence Agency the lowest state percentage is in South Dakota at twenty- three point six percent and the highest state percentage is
We need to start appreciating how much time and effort our teachers put forward into our education. They don’t have to waist their lives on the students, but they do it anyways. Why do they have to work so hard off of hours and not get paid for it when others get praised for it? Nobody can understand what a teacher goes through unless it is a teacher themselves. Teachers not only deserve a raise they deserve more respect. Now of days people are starting to give less respect to teachers more and more. Teachers will keep doing what they are doing, but not getting the pay they deserve for the hours they put in during and out off work is not right. Give teachers the pay they deserve or we will see a decline of teachers in our
“The education teachers receive isn’t good for anything and that advanced degrees aren’t worth additional compensation like, say, a physician or architect would get. “The field of education is less challenging than other academic concentrations,” it says. (“Are teachers paid too much? - The Washington Post”) According to research many believe that teachers are just paid babysitters. In fact, it is a big debate among the population because many question our teachers and the job that they do. Since some of the population seem to think that teachers are just overpaid babysitters let's give them the pay of a babysitter, give them the benefits that they deserve, and give them the time off
A couple of years later in 2011, lawmakers passed House Bill 1, which cut an astonishing 4 billion dollars in education funding and another 1.3 billion in special program funding from the Foundation School Program, the source of education dollars for school districts across the state. This was very unpopular among education advocates and teacher groups, and caused public outcry throughout the state. This radical reduction forced school districts to operate without millions of dollars in funding they were initially depending on. School districts were forced to cut special education teachers, teacher aides, bus drivers, and slowed or stopped school construction projects (NPR). My school district was forced to lay off or eliminate administrative and teaching positions in order to make sure the district budget is balanced. Stipends for bilingual teachers and other employees who take on extra duties were reduced or eliminated as well. Teacher stress and class sizes increased which made for a less than conducive teaching and learning environment. It wasn’t all bad news during that congressional session however. Lawmakers also passed Senate Bill 6, which allowed school
"Unions don't grant tenure - administrators do. Too many school boards and superintendents attack tenure rather than hold their own managers accountable for hiring and supervising teachers and, if necessary, removing those who don't make the grade. Tenure is granted by the board of education on recommendation of the superintendent -but many schools do a poor job of evaluating and supporting teachers…Tenure's not about protecting ‘bad’ teachers; it's about protecting good teachers. What would happen to teachers without tenure? They could - and would - be fired for virtually any reason. It’s not hard to imagine teachers being dismissed because they failed the daughter of an influential businessman or because the school board president's nephew needed a job. In these fiscally troubled times, what would stop a school board from replacing a veteran teacher at the top of the pay scale with a first-year teacher - simply to save money? Tenure is the first line of defense against attacks on academic freedom. Teachers can engage their students in a free exchange of ideas only if they are protected from arbitrary dismissal for doing so. Tenure prevents school boards from arbitrarily dismissing teachers for holding political, religious or social views with which they disagree.[Tenure] protects academic freedom the way the First Amendment protects freedom of the press” (NYSUT). Although that is the position that I
In today’s society one of the most important factors in selecting a career field is rate of pay. No matter whether the profession maybe, the dollar figure must be within a range that allows the employee to maintain a substantial lifestyle. The debate of teacher pay scales has raged on for years. Many argue that the current pay scale for teachers is a scale which rewards teachers merely for seniority. They argue that the current pay scale overlooks those educators which demonstrate exceptional performance. Teacher merit pay systems have been the most popular suggestions made to remedy the problems seen with the current pay scale. Although the current pay scale may not be completely effective, the idea of
Teachers have and will always have a big impact in everyone’s life and if not everyone, well, at least they did for me. They teach you everything you need to know about a subject and valuable life lessons, so why are they not paid sufficiently enough to make a decent living? Teachers salaries have always been low and I believe it is the time that changes. Being a lawyer, doctor, or engineer is great, but none of that would be possible without the insight of a teacher, I will inform you in this paper on why I believe there is a need for action. I will go over the background of teacher’s salaries, my ideas on what would be best for teachers not just in Texas, but nationwide, and pros and cons on the issues and ideas at hand.
But for those who are, they should be reevaluated to see if they’re really worthy of having all those benefits. If not, those teachers should have some kind of actions taken towards them, whether it be less benefits, maybe risk losing their job, and just something that will make them realize that they have a job to do as teachers and that’s to teach. I understand it’s also up to the students to be motivated to learn, but how can they learn if the teacher is not properly teaching them and doesn’t care for their students success or helping them gain the knowledge and skills that they need. Having tenured teachers that aren’t motivated to teach and don’t care for their students, results to having a negative impact on those students. Which makes those students not fully prepared for their future classes. It’s just a negative impact all around because only the teacher benefits and no one
“ It is a systemic problem, and pursuing the elimination of tenure to solve it is a fool’s errand.” ( Teacher tenure: an innocent victim”)
The tenure is a contractual right to protect teachers from being terminated for political or personal reasons. According to the “Vergara V. California” case, nine students file a lawsuit in California state courts about the teachers has an insufficient teaching method in schools. Student claim that they can’t get a quality education because this system has created an issue. However, teachers are not the only reason that affects students. There are many aspects that may influence students in a negative way, such as the student environment, family, and school resources. If people look at those aspects, they will notice that with poorly performing teachers, people start to take aggressive actions towards the tenure system, which is unfair to the union or CTA. Society should consider the pros and cons to make the decision about whether the tenure system should be eliminated or not. The pros of the tenure system are, it prevents teachers from being fired due to unfair reasons. It can also help teachers perform better in school as a result of being freed from the stress of being fired. On the other hand, tenure makes it difficult to remove inadequate teachers because of the long paper work, along with it is the costly fees to remove deficient teachers. After considering this, the pros of the tenure are the reasons that the tenure system should not be eliminated because it proves tenure is benefits to schools. In addition, there are no guarantees that schools will become better,
The tenure is the employment contract created to protect teachers from being fired by the political or personal reasons. According to “Vergara V. California” case, this system has been created an issue that with the support of Student Matter, nine students file a lawsuit in California state courts about the inadequate teaching of teachers in schools. Tenure creates a legal series of barriers that could cost the district “Upwards of $250,000,” in an attempt to dismiss the teacher. On top that it is not the outstanding teachers that gain tenure. Nearly every K-12 teacher receives tenure eventually and this has caused a lot of dispute from other career paths. Only “42 out of 50 states require three years or less before qualifying for tenure”. This is outrageous to some, when every day in other paths an individual would need to earn superiority through seniority to gain a semblance of that
The best teachers bring their students’ knowledge. A good teacher makes students more interested in their lectures. However, these teachers get fired because they are hired later than the other teachers who have been working for a long period of time; therefore, the Tenure system is a system that keeps teachers from being fired when they teach at a school for a certain amount of time. The tenure system protects the older teachers that had been teaching for a long time, and they get to keep their jobs. Should the tenure system in public schools be eliminated? Some people think that this rule should not be eliminated because they want to save expenses. Due to the fact that older teachers get paid more because of their experience vs. less experienced younger teachers, they can save money if younger teachers get hired. On the other hand, people agree that the tenure system in public schools should be eliminated to keep teachers working hard to improve their knowledge, teaching skills, and responsiveness. In order to provide more benefits for both teachers and students, the tenure system in public schools should be eliminated.
