The Media Plays a Negative Force In We Need To Talk About Kevin The media prominently impacts our lives as we are drawn to a fictional world, which influences our attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors about controversial subjects. Children are exposed to various sorts of media that may play a positive or negative role in their socialization. If children are involved in numerous extra-curricular activities they have a broadened social network, which allows them to be stimulated in positive atmospheres. If children are unable to participate in extra-curricular activities, they do not get the same opportunity to bond with other children outside of the classroom setting. “It’s always the mother’s fault, ain’t it?” (Shriver, 230). If the boy turned out to be bad we blame the mother figure because she was supposed to be the one looking after the child. If Eva were not being judged by society then she would have felt more reassured in what she was doing. Violence now of days is honored, glorified, and yet celebrated in mass media and motions to society that violence is normal, glamorous, and widespread in our culture (Caron, 113). Violence is not only present in television shows and movies, but also in other forms such as cartoons, and video games (Caron, 121). Children are playing more and more violent video games at younger ages because the parents are not paying enough attention to what is going on in their child’s life. In the book We Need To Talk About Kevin, Kevin was introduced to violent video games at a young age. He was an unusual child because he never participated in any extra-curricular activities in order to broaden his social circle. He was an introvert, unlike most children, who are extraverted. Instead of getting involved, Kevin chose to isolate himself from the outside world. When Eva learned she was pregnant with Celia, she had hoped that Kevin would share her excitement of him having a new playmate. Kevin was not pleased and refused to have anything to do with her.
