The development of the Internet and more specifically the business website has seen brand recognition by consumers escalate to never before seen heights. Because of this brand recognition, it has become important for businesses to design their websites to reflect their overall marketing strategies. This is especially important in the retail world. All retail businesses have a similar overall marketing strategy of generating sales and retaining the customer for future sales. Most of the retail giants still greatly rely on the success of their brick and mortar stores to turn a profit. However, internet sales for these brick and mortar stores have increasingly risen over the last few years to compete with the retail stores like Amazon that are strictly internet based businesses. Brick and mortar retail stores, such as Walmart, Target, Kmart, and Nordstrom, have each designed their websites to reflect the overall retail marketing strategy as well as the individual marketing strategies that have made their brick and mortar businesses successful.

Websites are becoming increasingly important in today's society. They are seen as the image of the company and reflects its standards. The most important quality would be functionality, if it is not user friendly then it will be passed on by. Second to that is appearance, aesthetic is a major factor in the modern day culture. The website needs to deliver the message that the company is trying to convey, wether it is a store, news, or social site it should be instantly recognizable as such. With the increasing number of websites and considerable investment in them, website quality evaluation has become an important activity (Naik and Tripathy, 2008). In recent years, providing compelling online experiences via websites has emerged as an important issue in developing favourable consumer behaviour responses and outcomes in the internet environment (O'Cass and Carlson 2010). Despite the rapid growth of E-commerce sites, 43 percent of the them fails, and the difference between the success and the failure is consumer experience, according to Ecommercetimes.com. The Dotcom Survival Guide reported there is still one resource left untapped that can save dotcoms from failure. It's the one resource that historically is most ignored in favor of ads, press, and flashy features yet it's the one resource that can lead dotcoms to survival. That resource is customers. Customers can provide the revenues needed to attain profitability. Customers can give the word-of-mouth marketing to drive traffic. Customers can give the feedback needed to continually improve the website.
