With the advent of computers and related technologies of communication, the nature of communication has changed drastically. There are some positive highlights to this change as well as negative highlights to this change based on my experience. In my younger years, the only form of communication was one on one communication or writing through snail mail. However, this is not the case today. Today, I make use of emails, social media, and other chatting forums to communicate both professionally and personally to family, friends, and relatives. I have found this change to have its advantages as well as disadvantages. In this paper, I will discuss how computer-mediated communication has aided my communication as well as how it compares to the type of communication that was available during my younger years. In addition, I will give a comparison between computer-mediated communication and person-to-person communication.
The advancement of technology has limited the ability to communicate non-verbally. Non-verbal communication is the main channel of communicating as it helps in expressing and interpreting others. It comprises of cues such as facial expressions, postures and gestures. Nowadays, people are using e-mails, texts and social networking sites to interact as well as express themselves. As in “Why Gen-Y Johnny Can’t Read Non-Verbal Cues,” Mark analyzes ,”We live in a culture where young people- outfitted with iPhone and laptop and devoting hours every evening from age 10 onward to messaging of one kind and another- are ever less likely to develop the “silent fluency” that comes from face-to-face interaction” (146). The disadvantage of using technology as a means to communicate with others is people tend to lose fluency in non-verbal cues, as a result misunderstand and offend others. Any number of emoticons used by people cannot measure their depth of their feelings. Non-Verbal aspect of communication should not be replaced by the advancement of
Electronic communication plays vast roles in the way individuals communicate in today’s society, this has created a significant change to the quality of interpersonal
Nowadays, the communications with others are different from the traditional ways and normal rules. People take advantage of new technology to communicate instead of face to face. Although the email and text message make people easy to communicate, the society
Using texting as a quicker and more efficient form of communication takes the emotional connection out of the equation. It allows us to not be physically near the recipient or to take responsibility for miscommunications that lead to hurt feelings. While texting, students do not need to make eye contact with their recipient or learn to read their body language. In addition, there is no need to learn the art of persuasive argument or exchanging and building on ideas. This is not only harming students in the classroom, but can have negative effects when entering the workforce. After leaving college, students hope to land a job in their field of expertise. In the workforce, teams are a diverse collection of persons – all ages and different cultures. Texting may be acceptable in some situations, but there is still a great need for face to face interactions. We learn how to become more comfortable meeting new people and interviewing for jobs. There is nothing wrong the light banter between friends that texting can provide, but the conversation is not necessarily deep.
In the article “The Relationship between Unwillingness-to-Communicate and Students’ Facebook Use”, a study was conducted to examine how Facebook use and unwillingness to communicate in interpersonal communication are related, motives for using Facebook, and the effect that Facebook has on behavior, attitude, and unwillingness to communicate. The study found that there were multiple motives for why people use Facebook including maintaining relations, entertainment, boredom, and to meet new people. The study also discovered that
The researchers believed that after the online communication and chat rooms became viral, the adolescents will have no social connectedness and well-being. They then figured out that they were wrong. They found out that online communication helps the adolescents social connectedness and well-being rather than reduces it. The researchers came up with three assumption about online communication and how it affects the adolescents. First, online communication stimulates online self-disclosure, second, online self-disclosure
Because of the challenges I am facing on the road to obtaining an MSN degree, I have decided to pursue the degree using online education. This online program tract offered by University of Phoenix is ideal for my personal situation. However, working completely online will affect personal communication with my professor and classmates. We will communicate on an online forum. In a classroom setting, my personal communication strength is non-verbal cues. When I am expressing a thought, I use facial expressions and I am receptive to cues exhibited from the audience. However, in an online setting, non-verbal cues are not used. Personalization is lost when using the Internet to convey a message (Todericiu, Muscalu, & Fraticiu, 2012) I must use writing skills to convey my ideas with the class. This is considered my weakness when communicating via online with professors and fellow classmates. To improve my personal communication, three strategies will be implemented. The first strategy is by being clear and concise in my writing. Second, prior to posting on the forum, I will organize my ideas so that the message is delivered effectively. Last, in a classroom setting, I would be an active listener. In the online setting, I will read other postings and before responding, ensure I understand the message. Implementing these strategies improve my communication skills in my online courses.
Mr Nass at stanford states the following: “the ultimate risk of heavy technology use is that it diminishes empathy by limiting how much people engage with one another, even in the same room” ( Richtel 18). This shows that because of heavy use of technology, students are not efficient communicators. Students have commenced a poor alternative for communication by texting and emailing which is the non human way of communication. Students are even texting or emailing one another even if their in the same room. Some may argue that, technology is not ruining students communication skills. However, students that use technology to much end up having non efficient communication
After receiving informed consent from participants under the legal age each participant will then complete a questionnaire on their online communication usage. Online communication will be defined as texting, emailing, use of social networking cites, and any other form of chat rooms. If a participant must “log on” to communicate with another person this is a form of online communication. This questionnaire will be given to students in middle and high school during their social studies classes and given to those students in undergraduate psychology classes. Participants will be asked to provide only their age and sex. There will be a spot on the questionnaire for each participant to enter a 4 digit pin number and if they are chosen to participate further this is how they will be identified. Questionnaires will be collected and sealed in an envelope until collected by this researcher or one of her colleagues.
Communication research study was conducted to make an analysis of shared messages. These repeated forms of activity follow traditions in the communication discipline. In this academic journal present how the empirical tradition follows. The wordless and clear signal decisions are bases on careful thoughts. This study was done primarily in computer-mediated communication. The issue's encounters were the lack of face-to-face talk that subtracted the non-verbal cues and regulating feedback. Although it may be true that today's technology are people's main source to get through life, becoming an essential thing, yet, it has driven our lives out of the world, that we should experience. According to the article “I’m not LMAO at Ridiculous Email from my Students”, written by anonymous, it argues that young adolescents are communicating to people they don’t know personally, such as their professor, in a non-formal way. The minds of adolescents force them to think that technology has given a way to have any communication they prefer, when that is false. All communication is different, but all must have respect for each other, and some reason technology itself makes people to interact in whichever way.
Face-to-face communication seems to be a dying art – replaced by text messaging, e-mails, and social media. Human communication and interactions are shaped by available technologies.
Importance of communication by face-to-face is declining in today’s digital era as one can live about a whole day without interacting with people. Now days, people depend highly on the facilities of text messages, emails, and social media. As long as it is impossible to reject the role of these facilities and the method that they have changed communication, so it is necessary to balance these online communications with face-to-face communication.
