Men are considered to be the dominant gender in basically every industry. This heavily applies to the “Hollywood” film industry, where most films are directed, produced and/or written by men. With this, it’s no doubt that these men have a sense of power over everything, since they are in charge. Unfortunately, some men take this power a little too far. Over the years, various male celebrities have been accused of sexual abuse and harassment towards their female co-stars, assistants etc. The most recent example of this is the various allegations against one of the biggest film producer in Hollywood, Harvey Weinstein. Since the allegations have come out, a bunch of female celebrities have lent their support towards the victims of Weinstein and some even shared their own experiences with the disgraced producer. However, not many male celebrities have come out to condemn Weinstein’s actions. In fact, The Guardian, a British news agency released an article stating that they asked over 20 male celebrities who worked closely with the producer, and none of them returned their calls at the time (Wong and Levin,2017). To explain the event and why Weinstein and these male celebrities acted the way they did in this situation, I decided to use the classical theory “Conflict Theory” and the contemporary theory “Feminist Theory. After looking at both theories, I have decided that Conflict Theory is the best way to explain this situation due to the “power status” Weinstein and the men have
During the modern era there has been a successful historical change in Australia, established from a range of progressive ideas and movements. To a significant extent, the progressive ideology of first wave feminism achieved social and political change in Australia, shown through the Australian suffragette movement. Immense development through key features, values, motives, attitudes and beliefs of the suffragette movement has shaped Australia; supported by momentous individuals.
In the media we see today, and movies that are continually coming out all have a central idea in common. They all show and represent the idealistic perspective of male versus female in society. From cartoons to chick flicks to romances and comedies we notice identifiable differences and trends represented between the two genders. In the movie I watched, “Clueless,” there are many examples illustrating male superiority over female, ideas of what femininity should be, and female appeal towards the male figures in the film.
Daddy’s princess. Big brother’s responsibility. Daddy’s little girl. Some people view these as a sweet pet names for young ladies, but these verbal cues inexplicitly condition women to view themselves as the property of men starting at a young age. These learned notions may take hold as women begin to develop. As young girls mature, they find themselves striving to please their fathers and other male figures as one of their main aspirations in life due to this conditioning from society. (Rholetter p. 1) The submissive nature of young girls is a common theme in literature, but looking through the Feminist Lens offers readers a better understanding of the struggle surrounding remaining submissive or demanding power occurs.
While it’s widely known that men dominate board rooms, newsrooms, and political offices, it’s arguably less obvious that they also determine what viewers see when they are relaxing in front of the TV or theater screen. It is not surprising that the male-dominant culture of Hollywood display itself in a lack of female characters. “With a lack of women behind the camera comes with a lack of women’s speaking roles and screen presence (Missouri, M. 2014).” When female characters are present, sexist stereotypes often convert them into little more than background props- the “damsel in distress” who is often saved by a male hero or the “dream girl” who attracts a male protagonist. Because Hollywood is so male-dominated, films and television often gives a limited perspective on women themselves. Viewers see only that the world is driven by men which sends women and girls troubling message and harm.
In order to get the best possible answers to the questions we asked, we used various sources such as a TED talk on the topic of sexism (TEDtalksDirector). It is of relevance, due to its knowledge of the data behind Hollywood’s sexism.

In the wider conversation of modern day feminism, many people tout loud acts of rebellion such as burning bras or refusing to shave as protests against the patriarchy. Marches and loud voices are often given the spotlight in showcasing ways women fight back against the oppression they are subjected to on a daily basis. The wider narrative often forgets about the subversive acts that women do everyday to challenge the patriarchal hierarchy of power: mothers raising sons who will be the men to stand up to misogynists each day, teenage girls who shop on all areas of department stores in order to mix and match what may be seen as traditionally male or female clothing, housewives who also run side businesses from their homes to provide them with additional money just for their needs. These subversive acts are women who don’t ask for permission when they see an opportunity for healing or liberation, deciding to take the chance because they have already lost so
From Evelyn Fox Keller with her book, A feeling for the Organism to Judith Butler with Gender Trouble and Sarah Harding with her revolutionary work on standpoint theory, the role of gender in science and society in general, has been poked and prodded over the years without any fruitful agreements across disciplines. For the most part, the theories proposed have contributed heavily to feminist epistemology. With oppression and marginalization at the center point of the issues concerning gender and science, in this paper, I will try to shift the conversation slightly to address trust and its epistemic role in science. By understanding the definitions provided by feminist scholars such as Harding and Haslanger, the relation between trust, gender
Women should never be forced to face sexual harassment for fear of losing their jobs. The shocking fact of the entire situation is how well-known this secret was in Hollywood. And it begs the question: how do you separate art from the artist? Harvey Weinstein has produced some of the most extraordinary films of all time, but that doesn’t excuse his actions. Reports of sexual harassment allegations against men in the film industry are incredibly common these days, but does that mean we need to completely disregard the films they’ve made? It’s hard to appreciate someone’s work in the same way after learning about a sexual harassment charge against them, but movies are made by thousands of people, and should all their work be disregarded because of one person’s actions? It’s difficult to find the line at where to judge people, because artists aren’t the same as their art, but we should still acknowledge their past mistakes. While it’s terrible that something so horrific had to happen to bring this to the attention of the media, it brings hope for the future. For the first time, women are being listened to. People are finally being held accountable for their actions, and while it’s hard to acknowledge that this has been a well-kept secret for decades, it’s created a community where women are able to share their personal
The film deals with male’s identity and gender issues. Laura Mulvey feminist criticizes Hollywood cinema as phallocentric. Yet, Steve Neale argues males can be subservient like females. Steve Neale’s
Several types of special focus exegesis exist in the Ruth 1:1-22. Feminist interpretation can be found in verses 15-17 when Ruth commits to Naomi and makes the choice that she will follow Naomi. At the time, it was not the norm for one woman to be so dedicated to another. Ruth tells Naomi that she will give up everything to follow Naomi and her God. While making this decision Ruth will “lives among and helps to support the Israelite people.”
At the SAG awards on Sunday, many celebrities spoke out and showed support for the anti-sexual harassment movement called “Time’s up” in Hollywood. Many powerful and famous women in Hollywood supported the movement and used their awards speech to address sexual harassment by sharing their own personal stories. Other stars gave speeches to express how happy they are that people are standing with them against sexual harassment. There is a lot of conversation happening now in Hollywood about the movement, and many people agree with the movement’s purpose of ending sexual harassment. While a lot of men agree with the movement, others like Constance Wu, star from “Fresh Off the Boat,” said the movement made him very uncomfortable. Many women say they don’t like how they are treated as being inferior to men, and they are going to speak out against sexual-harassment no matter
Feminist’s perspectives of the welfare state and women’s involvements have been used to contest gender inequalities. Conversely, there are numerous feminist approaches depending on each political ideology; this essay will identify various feminist viewpoints. In order to determine Feminisms impact on the welfare system, a comparison of pre- war and post- war ideology of how society viewed women’s role as within the political system. According to Pamela Abbott and Claire Wallace (1997) pre-war concept of men and women’s roles were grounded in the notion that ‘men were considered as providers, women were naturally the dependent of the husband’, ‘Women’s contribution was as a wife and mother, there was little expectation for women to contribute
Talking about the British Women’s rights that focused on first wave feminism, the aim of women and also political changes affected the political lives of the women and paved the way for the future. Those who argue for or against the role of activism in the aims and goals of women are usually separated by the issue on whether women got the vote due to their struggle to gain that vote or their contribution to the war effort.
Feminist theory analyzes the gender inequality that women have faced throughout the years due to a patriarchal society. Women were expected to fit the traditional female and conform to the gender norms that society has constructed. According to A Brief Introduction to Critical Theory, “Feminism embodies a way of reading that investigates the text’s investment in or reaction to the patriarchal power structures that have dominated Western culture” (227). Patriarchal power has oppressed women economically, socially, and politically. Women were associated more with domesticity than with politics and financial situations. They were not provided the same educational opportunities as men. These issues have been addressed by people, such as Mary
