Is organic food better than conventional food? How safe is nuclear power? Can ghosts exist? Wendy Zukerman challenges these myths and many more by examining the facts in her podcast, Science Vs. This podcast combines science and current events, which certainly caught my attention. Zukerman also maintains an unbiased approach to each topic and keeps the listener's attention with clever commentary. I gained knowledge about society and these topics, as well as knowledge about myself, while watching this podcast. Zukerman remains neutral during the podcast, but her guests had fixed opinions. Throughout this podcast, I saw how headstrong people can be when speaking about controversial topics. Everyone that was interviewed had a strong opinion on the subject. While discussing the possibility of ghosts, Zukerman interviewed three people: a woman who believed she was living in a haunted house, a physicist, and a paranormal …show more content…
I appreciated her honesty because it allowed me to see more of the story than I do while watching a news program. One piece of information that is not commonly seen in television news stories is how much is truly known about the topic. In each of the episodes I watched, Zukerman admitted that little is known about many of these issues. The lack of knowledge about these issues is actually what makes them so controversial. During an episode about ghosts, multiple theories were given such as parallel universes and sleep paralysis, but at the end of the episode, Zukerman said that there is just not enough information to prove that ghosts exist or do not exist. I knew we did not have solid information of ghosts, but I was surprised to find out that there is little known about the benefits of organic produce. Organic produce is typically considered healthier but Science Vs showed me that there is not any proof that the use of chemicals is unhealthy. Zukerman’s honesty offered
Tattoos have recently become increasingly popular in youth, due to the hidden meanings and symbolism that they are endowed with. Helen Day’s opinionative blog entry, The Power of Ink, asserts that the significance of tattoos have diminished due to the fashionable aesthetics that tattoos project. A highly casual, yet acknowledging tone characterises her blog entry, which is predominantly catered to young Australian readers who are interested in receiving a tattoo. Accompanying her blog entry is a number of comments which both support and criticise the new phenomenon of tattoos. Poignantly complementing her article is an image of Ta Mako tattoos, a Maori form of body art, and the front cover of the written work “No tattoos before you’re
In a foreign country, in a room where each person speaks a drastically different language than the others, surviving a terrorist-hostage situation is a huge challenge. Bel Canto considers an interesting question that transcends the world of the novel: can humans communicate and survive without spoken language? Communication without words makes memories meaningful, is a more powerful platform for human emotions than words, and elicits deeper bonds. This can be seen through three elements in the book: simple gestures, music, and love.
Society today is quick to judge and state what is wrong and what is acceptable by the public. While some differences between Spelling Matters and Use Your Own Words are obvious, the similarities are relevant. Anne Trubek says that perhaps it is time to change or alter grammar rules to match the current generation and culture. We should advance our guidelines about what is proper and improper along with what is happening right now with the language. While Mikita Brottman says, “bad spelling can be a godsend—a way of weeding out those who are thoughtless and inattentive to detail” (p. 219).
In this paper, I will examine the article, Speak My Language. Specifically, I am going to explain some of cultural components and influences such as cultural norms, expectation, and expressions of the local youth culture in Santa Fe community. Also, beside the graffiti wall, I will figure out some of good strategies for keeping connection and relationships with youth in this community.
Letters – Letters should be structured properly, knowing exactly who there for, the date and any content appearing on the letter is presented properly.
Staff handle things fast and it all around seems like a happy staff-team to be apart. I have been wanting be staff again because I miss the old days of being staff on other server's and just handling things correctly and doing my job. I never abuse which is always a common issue with some servers but doesn't seem to be a major one on this server. I do watch 2 of the server's youtuber's which is the Owner and MackemYT which is an old friend of mines ''I am zak mackem if you are reading this'' sorry but I had to say that. Anyway's this server seems like a good place for me to handle my staff duties on and play on basically. I like to make my applications original so if somethings arent things you hear on the daily it's because i'm diffrent yea i'm diffrent. I honestly think being apart of the team I can help out a lot of people because I am usually in the teamspeak at all times and on the server when I can be on the server. I know being staff is a lot of responsibility and there is some drama involved at some points but I do not like to get my self into the drama I rather just continue working and trying to get those promotions! Being staff can be difficult some times because of the amount of issues that go on at once but I can help out with that along with
When I have discovered the ItsJerryandHarry Youtube channel, I noticed in one of their videos that they had a server. So I joined the server, started to play the minigames the server had, then got addicted to the server. This was about 1 and a half years ago.
“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow know what you truly want to become.”- Steve jobs. The quote shows a similarity in the book “Two Kinds” and “The Treasure Of Lemon Brown” because the treasure of lemon brown, greg wants to do something that the father doesn't want him to do. From the book Two Kinds it shows that the girl's mother wants to be in america because that's where her dreams are. In these stories “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan the authors uses figurative language to develop the mood of the stories.
In the editorial “Fighting Words: The War Over Language” By Jon Hooten , he’s argument is that war can be a terrible thing to have and to experience. Through my eyes i see that war can change people due to all the terrible things they saw and some people out there don’t really know much of the affects of wars. He says “Those of us sitting in high school during the winter of 1991 watched the airstrikes on Baghdad through the glassy eyes of CNN, with Peter Arnett and Wolf Blitzer calling the play by play”. What he saying is that in our current century we don’t really have to experience war to be able to know of the affects of war due to the news
Linguist Karla Holloway type of people think that black are dum. They don't know anything. I think they are also like us so we have to treat them with a same respect we treat others. Everyone should fight for theirs rights like black women did in this book. We should be proud of those type of people and also support them if you can. If you give a power to right person can make so many good changes in our society and also in our life. Black women truth doesn't matter in 1970’s. Hip-hop has many other things then just dance. They also have differents things like styles etc. Moore writes: I’m a Hip-Hop cheerleader

Brent Staples, college graduate turned journalist, has written several passages on his experiences with culture growing up as an African American man. His use of loaded language throughout his writing is a compelling way to depict his personal experiences with being stereotyping such as: “I was stalking sleep, not defenseless wayfarers.” And referring to himself “As a softy who is scarcely able to take a knife to a raw chicken” (Paragraph 2). He utilizes loaded language like this along with anecdotes to give us a glimpse into his life growing up as an intimidating tall black man being discriminated for traits he had no control over. Staples elaborates on how he first realized his ability to alter public space for the worse in his encounter
Donald Trump 2016 President of the United States. Well not quite yet. Trump in his campaign for presidency uses multiple rhetorical techniques to boost his popularity. He has uses biased language and scapegoating to boost his political campaign just as like Squealer boosts himself to power.
Riddley Walker, which is set two thousand years after a nuclear war, is written in a way that is hard to understand for the reader because it focuses on the perspective of a young boy who narrates in a language that has been shaped by a society in post-apocalyptic England. The language may seem simplistic and straightforward but its words connate different meaning and contexts. Therefore, it is the reader’s job to be able to make connections and come up with the meaning of the words for themselves through Riddley's perspective in which he uses worn-down English. Furthermore, because this novel focuses on Riddley’s point of view, it can be described as a picaresque novel in which Riddley is the hero living in a corrupt society devastated by
Hill uses this extract to degrade Hooper and show us a side of him that we don’t usually come to see. Kingshaw notices “the dark, damp stain of pee in the groin of Hooper’s jeans.” The use of alliteration here embodies Hooper’s fear and shows how scared he is at this moment that his physical reaction resorts to a childish behaviour. This could evoke the reader's emotion and make them sympathize Hooper’s humiliation. Furthermore, Hooper is seen “whimpering” and begging Kingshaw to not make him fall. The strong verb “whimpering” portrays an innocent animal which is ironic as throughout the book, Hooper is seen as anything but innocent. It also reflect his childish behavior at this moment as the whimpering action could be seen as babyish. This
