The first ever Wendy’s was opened in Columbus, Ohio in 1969 by Dave Thomas. Dave Thomas was the founder, CEO and one of the main organizational heroes at Wendy’s. He was a great businessman, philanthropist and after being in over 800 Wendy commercials, he was a well-known face in the media. His time at Wendy’s was so impactful that one of the mottos to this day at Wendy’s is “we do it Dave’s way”. A decade after Thomas’ first restaurant opening, Wendy's went public issuing a million shares a stock on the NASDAQ exchange. From then on out, the Wendy’s company kept growing, opening more and more restaurants and building up their menu. In fact, there are currently Wendy’s franchises in thirty countries across the world, according to the “Wendy’s Company Website: Wendy’s Around the World.” These countries include restaurants in the contents of North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. There are 6,500 restaurants in operation around the world. This makes Wendy’s a multinational organization. They were founded in one nation; however, they operate in many different nations around the world and alter their menus to appeal to the people and culture of the different countries they occupy (Roman). For example, different breakfast options are shown on the menu in the United States and Mexico as found on the “Wendy’s Company Website: Wendy’s Around the World.” This ability to adapt their menu has allowed Wendy’s to grow and expand to different regions around the world. In addition, technology plays a large part in globalization. Many fast food restaurants have social media accounts that can reach people anywhere in the world. Recently, Wendy’s Twitter account has made headlines after getting into a re-tweet count with a user over free chicken nuggets. This tweet is now the most re-tweeted tweet of all time with 3.47 million re-tweets according to the article titled “Quest for Free Chicken Nuggets Inspires Twitter’s Most Retweeted Tweet,” on the npr.org website (Gajanan). There are three primary characteristics of Wendy’s culture that are noted through Panmore Institutes website. These are, people-first attitude, emphasis on equality and ethical action (Meyer). They represent this people-first attitude by focusing on their employees and customers (Our people). We can see this with Wendy’s changing menu that embraces fresh ingredients and more healthy options than your typical fast food joint. Wendy’s was one of the first fast food chains that introduced popular fresh and seasonal salads for customers. An article about Wendy’s culture said, “You will see this with investments focused on the quality of our core menu offerings as well as with LTOs that build on our brand equities, with innovative ingredients and on trend flavors as well as compelling value offerings” (Tierney). Equality is also very important to the company. On the companies website, they stated how they “are committed to fairness and equal opportunity for our employees” (Our people). Wendy’s does not discriminate against any race, disability or genders. Wendy's shows prescriptive management which relates to culture. Wendy's represents this by having a strict policy that the interior restaurant must be clean and in no way should it be dirty for the guest (Our people).
