Caroline Stewart says in The Origin of the Werewolf Superstition, “Man was face to face with animal foes, and had to conquer them or be destroyed” (Stewart 7). Stewart further explains how Indo-European men would wear masks to disguise themselves from wolves because they were so afraid of them. Then they noticed that with the help of the masks that they were able to get closer to the wolves without being attacked. Therefore, they started using wolf skin and fur as robes and crawling around on their hands and feet to completely cover themselves in the image of the wolf.
