Wes Moore's Role Models In The Other Wes Moore

The book “ The Other Wes Moore” is a narrative story that shows the lives of two young men whom share the same name; Wes Moore. This book shows how two little boys came to be two very different people. Such as how both of them encountered the problems of drugs in their neighborhoods but how they decided to react. Or how both Wes Moores were successful students at one time in their life but one of them will be behind bars. Also both Wes Moores had encounters with the police during their childhood. But what made the two Wes’ who they are today? Whereas genetics make them who they are, both Wes Moores are impacted by external factors given his role models that surround him , his early life, and his successes and failures in life.

As he got new friends, and went to a completely different school then he was used to, his personality starts to change. He does not know how to act because the two worlds of his home and school life are two completely different environments. For example on page 53 of the book, Wes says “ I was becoming too “rich” for the kids from my neighborhood and too “poor” for the kids at school. I had forgotten how to act naturally, thinking way too much in one situation and getting tangled in the contradictions. My confidence took a hit.” In this quote, you’re able to see how his two worlds between his home life and his school life are really impacting him. He can’t decide how to act, in fear that he won’t be able to fit in with any of the kids. Given where he grew up and who he grew up with takes a huge roll in who he is today. For example, in chapter one of the book,Wes and his sister, Nikki, were playing tag and when Wes caught her, he had no idea what to do, so he hit her. When he did this, his mom came in and was very upset. On page 5 Wes says “So in the spirit of three-year-old boys everywhere who’ve run out of better ideas, I decided to punch her. Of course my mother walked into the room right as I swung and connected. The yell startled me, but it was the eyes that I remembered.” This memory is a reason why Wes has some of the opinions that he does today - because he remembers how upset his mother was when she saw him hit Nikki, so he doesn't want to ever hit a woman. Another childhood memory that could have made him who he is today is the first time that he decided to get involved and try drugs. The whole experience that he had with drugs as a kid are a huge part of who he became as an adult. On page 60, he says “Within minutes, Wes and Woody had hooked up with some older kids who were also skipping class that day. The boys all hopped on their bikes and rode to the corner store, where they picked up some Mad Dog 20/20 and rolling papers and, within a half hour the party was getting started.” Within this quote, you are able to see the choices that he made as a child can later on take an affect on their teenage and adult life.
