As a North Carolinian, I did not spend very much time dwelling on the state of West Virginia. To me, it was a state that not many people paid attention to. It kind of just did its own thing without anyone thinking twice about it. It wasn’t until when I was deciding where to go to school that West Virginia was formally introduced to me. Contacted by the Women’s Lacrosse coach, I visited and promptly fell in love with the University of Charleston but it was nothing I was expecting from West Virginia. When I began to tell people that I was going to school in WV, I was flooded with opinions. Every friend of mine I’ve told, gave me the same or similar response: “doesn’t everyone have sex with their cousins up there?” Now I would be lying if I hadn’t thought of that once or twice about it but that was only the tip of the iceberg when it came to my perceptions of the state.
Diving deeper into my opinions of West Virginia, I thought it would be full of “white trash” people and hillbillies. I picked up a lot of various stereotypes from TV shows about the state that did

Filmed in Morgantown, West Virginia, its prominent focus was on a group of teenagers that loved to drink and party. The cast was full of boys that considered themselves rednecks and girls that had little to no self-respect left for themselves based on how much they loved to take off their clothes in front of people. As disturbing as that sounds I really enjoyed watching the show. The wild and crazy stunts that these teenagers were pulling looked like so much fun. I figured that’s how most teenagers and college students spent their time living here. From various shows on the Discovery Channel is where I picked up the idea that most people that live up in the mountains brew moonshine. It’s especially prominent in the mountains of North Carolina and there have been times where I’ve seen these types of shows filmed in West

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the state of Arkansas? Chances are, that as an Arkansan the thoughts are quite different than those of someone not born or raised here. Hillbilly, redneck, barefoot, and trailer are a just few of the common first words invoked in the minds of “foreigners” by the word Arkansas. In the non-fiction work, Arkansas/Arkansaw: How Bear Hunters, Hillbillies, and Good Ol' Boys Defined a State, author Brooks Blevins provides readers with his idea of how Arkansas's image began, and then perpetuated over time. He provides several examples of the
Could ignorance contributed to the colonists “savage-like” tendencies? Could this ignorance be the same ignorance the colonists accused the Virginian Indians of exhibiting?
Alexander Whitaker makes Virginia sound like a wonderful land of new opportunities, therefore I would rather arrive in Virginia in the 17th Century than stay in Europe. The New World’s winters are described to be less cold than those of England and the summers are cooler than Spain’s. Although, there would be no need to worry about either winter or summer as much since spring and harvest (autumn) are the longest of the seasons. Also, it is portrayed as a land where the Natives do not fight, for they fear the colonists and therefore befriend them. This is different from the way Richard Ffrethorne describes them, but Richard makes them sound like savages and nor human beings at all. There are so many resources and food that there would be
For my paper I will focus on Valley of the Wolves: Iraq and the stereotyping/ enemy making techniques within this film through the American characters present and the several scenes when enemy making is most potent. I have chosen to focus on this because it is based on true events, like July 4, 2003 raiding of Turkish Special Forces offices by American Marines, who put hoods over their heads and detaining them for several days-- all because the Marines claimed to mistake the soldiers for insurgents-- as well as the Abu Ghraib prison human rights violations. I also have chosen this film to focus on because of the interesting perspective of the Americans being the enemy-- something I do not see often, if at all, as an American.
People in the south often get stereotyped based off their appearances or the way they act. Most southerners have rituals they follow, but some are just living life. The way Flannery O'Connor deals with the traditional social structure in the South in her fiction shows that it was of major concern to her and was the source of much of her power and humor. O'Connor's exposition of a southern society which values a good, moral person yet struggles to identify Three of her short stories deal with the relationship between Christianity and society in the South: "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," "Good Country People," and "Revelation.”
Smoking is one the top leading preventable causes of death in the world today.5 Among all the states in the United States, West Virginia is ranked the highest in regards to smoking among the adolescents.15 Smoking cigarettes is seen everywhere among adolescents and the adults, focusing on the current static readings of how severe it is common among the West Virginia adolescent age group. By developing and implementing tobacco-control programs it has been proven to reduce the rate of smoking cigarettes among adolescents in West Virginia.
Raleigh Hills is a small suburb just within Portland city limits, in the southwest hills of Washington County, though many often mistake it for being within Beaverton. Housing a population of 5,896 people as of the 2010 census, the vast majority of the population is composed of either married couples (50.8%), non-families (39.6%), or individuals (33.4%). So, in this way it deviates from the general vision of the suburbs being moreso oriented towards families with children, but in my little cul-de-sac, such a stereotype is perpetuated. Well, there’s at least one family with children in the neighborhood, due to the fact that I’ll often see a particular group of boys walking down the street. The neighborhood was named after one of Washington county’s
Talitha, your discussion board is very interesting. I learn so much about the West Indian culture in your discussion board. I have been in your shoes as well thinking that I know something about a culture and I did not know. The individual was also offended as well and tried to stereotype my culture as trying to getting me back. West Indians has many blacks in their culture. According to the website, West Indies, majority of the population of West Indians are Africans (West Indies, 2017). Many West Indians speak “creole languages, evolved from pidgin variants of European languages, have become the common languages of many of the people” (West Indies, 2017). In West Indians, they also have Puerto Ricans. In Spanish communities such as Purto
Las Vegas the place known for two huge things, the casinos and the Las Vegas strip; as we know the Las Vegas strip is where all the big-time events and gambling happens in the area. The Las Vegas strip is big, bright and loud you cannot miss it even with your eyes closed. The main issue of the strip is that it only shows one perspective of Las Vegas, the casino and maybe promiscuous side which can be interpreted as negative. The MGMs’ idea of the CityCenter displays the more versatile and diverse version of the Las Vegas area and not can change the stereotype that is linked with the city but, bring a new type of customer to the area. The CityCenter strived to be bigger and better than all the surrounding area of the Las Vegas strip, most buildings
"The hillbillies" produce all the tobacco and other byproducts that make Kentucky famous. Their agricultural careers are what makes them unique from other farmers. They value geography in history, rather than mathematics. "The hillbillies" consist of mainly republicans, which causes a lot of controversy and debates in my hometown. They value their possessions, such as, cars, records, and family history rather than material goods like "The

Does anyone know that stereotypes are a part of our everyday lives? Yes, it is true that we find ourselves in a situation where we make assumptions for large groups of people. Moreover, these untruths do not come as it is real. To illustrate, American people have some assumptions about my country India. Also, they believe that our country's people worship cows, uneducated people, and all Muslims are Arabs.
The Culture of Virginia refers to the distinct human activities and values that take place in, or originate from the Commonwealth of Virginia (Virginia Culture). Virginia was named for Queen Elizabeth I of England, who was known as the Virgin Queen. Historians think the English adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh suggested the name about 1584. That same year, Elizabeth gave Raleigh permission to colonize the Virginia region (Liberty of Virginia). Virginia has many nicknames as well. The most popular and lasting of Virginia's many nicknames is the ‘Old Dominion’. Unfortunately, I am not referring to the university. This nickname refers to Virginia's status as England's oldest colony in the Americas. Virginia is considered a commonwealth because it is a state in which the supreme power is vested in the people.
I’m from a town in rural South-Western Virginia. I grew up seeing what is often ignored in the
