One theory that comes to mind is the fact that the European and Mediterranean art did not have to be discovered. Brilliant works of art such as the Aphrodite of Knidos and other ancient European works of art did not have to be discovered. These works of art were always on display and in good condition. Many pieces of Pre-Columbian art went undiscovered for a long time. Even today we seem to just be scratching the surface in regards to the pre Columbian art that is still yet to be discovered.
