Long ago were the days when women had real inequality that burdened their lives. Through the efforts of early feminists they were able to overcome actual inequalities, showing that women had the capability to aspire to their dreams and should be allowed to. Women earned the right to vote, to own property under their name, choose any profession they want and earn pay based on their merit. Todays feminism is a corruption of what feminism should be. It has become a trivial movement that infantilizes women.
Approximately 20% of the US population still identify as feminist and argue that women still face inequality in western society. I will discuss and dismantle their main talking points, which are the wage gap, portrayal of women in the
For hundreds of years feminism woman fought for equality with men. They have been held back and their opportunities taken away from the political, and economic equality of the sexes. Woman have every right to be equal with men and feminism is what is slowly accomplishing this. It is a human right to be equal to others around you and it does not matter if you are male or female. They should both receive the same opportunities and privileges given in life and feminism helps women accomplish this task of equality. Woman should not be paid less in the workforce, or looked at as the weaker sex, or judged for what they or are how they act. And lastly woman should not be shut down for speaking their mind.
Feminist has been’ going on since the early 1700’s, just to implement a brief timeline, 1777 women lost the right to vote in New York, then in 1780 women lost their right vote in Massachusetts, 1784 women lost their right to vote in New Hampshire, finally 1787 the US Constitution gave all women the right to vote except the state of New Jersey who didn’t receive their rights until 1790. (Feminism in the United States, 2016) After all has been said and done, they have successfully won equality.
Feminism can be traced back to the late 1800’s when the women’s rights association was formed by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton with the goal to achieve voting rights for women through a congressional amendment to the constitution. This was just the start of feminism, but back then it wasn’t called that. It wasn’t until the 1960’s and 70’s that the official feminist movement began. Their main focus was “dismantling workplace inequality, such as denial of access to
Feminism is considered a political concept. It is an analysis of why and how women are oppressed. It is a vision of a society where women are liberated and sex role stereotypes are no more. It is also a conviction that oppression of women is a contradiction in society. Women feminists fought for their right to not be property, rights to their inheritance, rights to an education and to a religion that was not patriarchal. Even though feminism had been seen for quite some time, the actual term "feminist" was not first used until 1912. "The modern feminist movement began a as result of sweeping social, political and industrial changes in Europe and the United
As a result of the movement, women have been gaining rights from feminism for over a thousand years. The Feminist Movement officially started in Seneca Falls at the first Women’s convention. Where they fought for the right to vote, even though it took over 70 years for women to get the opportunity. The people who participate in the movement fought for numerous rights for women, like voting, birth control, and equality in the workplace(Simon). Without millions the of people supporting, Women wouldn’t be treated or have the same rights they do today. That’s why it’s still so important to support feminism because if no one does all the hard work of the women in the past would go to waste.
1a: America falls 8th on a list of the most feminist countries, even though it does not quite seem like a fantastic place for women. Though despite the inequalities in America women represent the majority of college students and high degree holders. Women do not; however, receive paid maternity leave which is a reason why it is placed 8th on this list. (Women’s rights worldwide: Top 10 feminist countries). A good aspect is that women in America are more likely to have blue collar jobs than a woman in Sweden (which is ranked 3rd) where the majority have pink collar jobs. The fact that woman can obtain such jobs show that it is possible for women to be able to do the same work than men do. With America being placed 8th there is much to be learned from the countries ranked higher.
To begin with I would like to talk about some of the issues relating to feminism. For thousands of years there have always been issues with genders being unequal as it has always been believed that different genders have always had gender roles, these issues have always been dismissed up until now. Before the 1960’s women were expected to follow traditional roles such as having to do the cleaning, the cooking, taking care of the children and being feminine or ‘lady-like’, they were seen as the caretakers of the home and family. After completing basic education women were expected to stay at home rather than going out to pursue a career. Women were treated like objects by men and the men were sometimes in charge of the family and perhaps even seen to be above women. Men and women were also payed differently, even if they had the exact same job and job responsibilities, women were payed less than men. In 1963 the Equal Pay Act came to action and it was forbidden for women to be payed less
To begin, what is feminism? Feminism has many meanings. Author Kenneth Allan believes that feminism is idea based that is an intrinsic to mankind, especially women, in that they want to feel a part of society and the social structure as well as contribute to social issues or political matters. Allan goes on to state that feminism is the “idea about equal rights of women that began around the enlightenment around 1792” (Allan, 2013). In that time Mary Wollstonecraft was a pioneer of the subject. She sought to shed light on the inequality of women and ways to remedy this injustice. Wollstonecraft also wrote a book about feminism called: “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman in 1792. This book clearly detailed and showed a link between gender and the discourse of human nature found in the Enlightenment period and brought the issue of women’s rights to the surface for a general debate” (Allen, 2013). Feminism and women’s rights are not a new concept and has at least been a debate for 223 years. Wollstonecraft was not the only women to breach this subject. There have been many early pioneers of feminism such as: Harriet Martineau, Charlotte Gilman Perkins and many more. They all had one goal, in one way or another. That goal was and still is today to achieve economic equality along with sexual equality. Equality has no boundaries in the pure sense of the word. Women simply have asked, marched and protested for their interests to be heard and their
Women made up 50.8% of the United States population in 2013 (United States Census Bureau), yet made only 78 cents to a white man’s dollar (Hill). Women also hold only 17% of the seats in Congress, about 90 seats total, and less than 3% of Fortune 500 businesses are run by women (25 Surprising Stats to Share on Women's Equality Day). And this is just for white women. For many women of color, the statistics are even more grim, Latina women making only 53% of what white men make (Hill). This inequality of the sexes spreads out of the workplace and into women’s everyday lives. Feminism works to even the playing field between males and females by promoting female empowerment and supporting women in their endeavors. The feminist movement
In conclusion, women have made a critical improvement to the circumstances in their lives through feminism. Primarily, men used to run everything as they considered themselves superior to women, but through feminism movements, women have been able to acquire equal rights to men, and are still striving to acquire more rights that men take for granted. Feminism is a philosophy that has helped women to acquire equal rights in the society. In addition, feminism is gaining equal opportunities and rights for both men and women, and allowing women to have control of their lives, and the women have achieved this. Feminism had a huge impact on the lives and roles of women in the society. Many women got sick of the strict home life that had been implicated on them by men. They got tired of staying at home and taking care of the family and domestic chores as their only work and decided enough is enough, things had to change. Women wanted equality between men and women in addition to equal opportunities in education, and employment opportunities. Feminism has played a great role on the everyday role of women in the
“I think every woman in our culture is a feminist. They may refuse to articulate it, but if you were to take any woman back 40 years and say ‘Is that the world you want to live in?’ they’d say no.” said a woman herself. The fight for women’s’ rights in America over the past decades has challenged existing gender stereotypes and power dynamics in the socio-economic sphere of our culture. The fight then was for equal rights. It challenged the school of thought that women can only be truly happy and fulfilled through marriage and motherhood. Women were in dire need to be recognized as citizens
Although women are still facing unequal rights, feminism has affected society in a positive way. Women are now able to vote, they have freedom of speech, any women can get into college or a university, women are allowed to own property, etc. A perfect example would be Hillary Clinton who run for president in 2016. Hillary Clinton a woman who has been fighting for children in the past years. A woman who is not afraid to let her voice out. Hillary was the woman who stood against a man. Sadly, she lost the elections but people wonder what change could she had brought. Would women have had more equal rights? That’s a question which we probably won’t never know the answer. But one of the most active feminist who has fight for equal rights and wants
There are many different strands that define feminism and feminists. In the article “The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same? Reflections on the State of Sexism.”, author Judith A. Howard dives into the different meanings of Feminism and all the factors that affect sexism and feminism. The differences throughout the centuries of the term “ feminist” ranges from the year 1970s and 1990s and in between the 1960s in America. Howard states “in the 1960’s the terms “feminism’’ and ‘’women’’ referred to almost completely to white, relatively economically privileged, well educated woman” (2). Other races and ethnicities were not considered because of the strong racism during this time. Howard explains that in our society today we classify those terms dramatically differently. In the 1970s, many feminists spoke of women, all women. It didn't matter if they were a certain race or ethnicity and also in the 1990s. Howard states in her article that “ in the 1970s, women earned about 59 cents on the dollar of men’s earnings, and many occupations were highly gender segregated” (3). Howard states that occupations are highly gender segregated and it shows it's sexist practice that shines the light on Institutional practices. Next the author shows the global perspective of the “ The World’s Women 1995.” All of the countries cited by this report show that women work 6 more hours per week than men and still get paid less
Despite America being one of the most powerful counties in the world, there is still the issue of gender inequality. America has one of the most or the most influential ability yet still falls short on gender equality. The workplace in America needs some in improvement in the aspect of paying both men and women the same. The insensitivity of gender equality has had people in the workplace and in everyday situations speaks out about the equality women deserve. These situations have sparked feminist movements all around American and the world including actress Emma Watson’s HeForShe campaign and the United States Woman’s National Soccer Team filing complaints for unequal pay. Both men and women are tired seeing the inequality just because of
Feminism has been around since the early 1900s, but the longer it stays around the less needed it’s become (“History and Theory of Feminism”). What is feminism though? “Feminism is a political, cultural, or economic movement aimed at establishing equal rights and legal protection for women (“History and Theory of Feminism”).” But, people in this day and age are more interested in equal rights for all genders, not just for women. People believe that feminism is over and done because feminists have accomplished all of their first, second, and third wave goals. Therefore, we don’t need feminism.
