AFT2 Accreditation Audit – Task 2 Nightingale Community Hospital is a healthcare facility that prides itself on being a hospital of choice within its community by being a leader in providing high quality healthcare. The first of Nightingale Community Hospital’s value statements addresses safety. A key aspect in providing safe patient care includes communication among caregivers.

During the discharge process the child’s father came to the unit. He identified his daughter and she identified him and appeared to be comfortable. At this time, the discharge nurse provided discharge instructions to the father and then allowed the child to leave with him. Approximately 30 minutes after discharge, the mother arrived only to find out that her daughter had been discharged to her father. At this time the mother was visibly frustrated and informed the nurse that she had primary custody of the 3 year old and her siblings. Upon learning these facts, hospital security and local law enforcement were notified and a “code pink” was activated hospital wide. A “code pink” alerts all staff that an infant or child has possibly been abducted. At this time a specific response protocol is put into action to hopefully locate the perpetrator quickly. Local law enforcement located the child within approximately 30 minutes. She was at her father’s residence and apparently unharmed. The father did not face criminal charges. The CEO of Nightingale Community Hospital visited with the mother and assured her that steps and new processes would be put in place to ensure this type of event did not happen again.
