A1. Leadership Style: My leadership style evolved from an autocratic style while serving in the military to a situational style in my current career as a therapy supervisor. My staff consists of sixteen occupational therapists, three occupational therapy assistants, one speech-language pathologist, and ten physical therapists. The staff members are unique individuals with high level of education and various skill levels. Together, they are a highly engaged team. The most senior staff member has thirty-nine years of clinical experience with twenty years as the department supervisor. The frontline employees are the individuals that do the work and implement the changes. If the leadership provides the correct level of training and mentoring to motivated staff, the empowered staff members will exceed clinical outcomes, meet organizational objectives, and develop professionally. A1b. Weaknesses: Two weakness of situational leadership are potential diversion of the leader’s focus from long-term goals and exclusion of “interpersonal relationships within work groups that can have a negative impact on performance”. The leader’s focus tends to be on his or her staff’s readiness for the change and abilities in relationship to priority tasks rather than on “situational factors as determinants of numerous leader behaviors such as providing support and direction, participation and focus on follower achievements” (Lydamore, n.d.). The exclusion of the team’s interpersonal relationship in this model is a valid issue. Majority of tasks require multiple employees to work together to complete. If there is dysfunction among the staff members or between teams, it can undermine the team’s successful completion of the tasks. A2. Comparison of Leadership Style: My current situational leadership style along with autocratic and transformational styles have some similarities and differences.
