For starters, I liked how everyone decided their own fate in life. Also, they wouldn’t be handed anything after they chose their path for life. An example from the text is “ Tomorrow at the Choosing Ceremony , I will decide on a faction; I will decide the rest of my life; I will decide to stay with my family or abandon them”. The quote was said on page 2 by Tris. To me the choice made by every person resembled what they believed in and their characteristics inside. I didn’t like that bring divergent was a bad thing. In today’s society being different usually makes you stand out and feel special. Different …show more content…
Usually I would think people would chose the faction in which they grew up in, which was abnegation. Joining Dauntless gave Beatrice the opportunity to have a new life, as a result, she renamed herself Tris. Two quotes I found that coincide with what I have explained are “Beatrice…We should think of our family…But we must also think of ourselves.”, This quote was on page page 36 and was said by Caleb. The other quote was “ A new place, a new name. I can be remade here”. This was said by Tris on page …show more content…
I love the way she was able to cover up such a huge secret, which was being divergent. Although, sometimes she showed peeks of being a divergent, she was able to convey it and continue on without many people knowing. I for a fact know that I couldn’t keep myself from exposing a unique ability like the Divergent. “You manipulated the simulation; you’re Divergent. I’ll delete the footage, but unless you want to wind up dead at the bottom of the chasm, you’ll figure out how to hide it during the simulations!”. The quote was said by Four on page
People who are driven by greed end up focusing on what they do not have instead of being grateful for what they do have. This is relevant in the short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant because Mathilde Loisel ends up losing everything she owns just because she lets greed drive her decisions and get the best of her. When receiving an invitation to an extravagant ball, she declines because she says she does not have anything nice to wear. In the beginning of the short story she says, “There is nothing more humiliating than looking poor in the middle of a lot of rich women.(Maupassant).” The reader sees how she puts value in possessions and what others think of her. After finding a dress and then borrowing a necklace that she thought
Around the world, values are expressed differently. Some people think that life is about the little things that make them happy. Others feel the opposite way and that expenses are the way to live. In Guy de Maupassant’s short story, “The Necklace”, he develops a character, Madame Loisel, who illustrates her different style of assessments. Madame Loisel, a beautiful woman, lives in a wonderful home with all the necessary supplies needed to live. However, she is very unhappy with her life. She feels she deserves a much more expensive and materialistic life than what she has. After pitying herself for not being the richest of her friends, she goes out and borrows a beautiful necklace from an ally. But as she
Tris however was not the only dauntless member that was divergent. A man named Four which was one of the leaders in dauntless was also divergent. Four was just a nickname Tobias was Four’s real name. Tobias was nicknamed Four because he could pass simulations within four minutes
Tris has never really felt at home in Abnegation so she switches to Dauntless. Normally this would not be so harsh on her family, but her only brother also switches to another faction called Erudite leaving her parents with no family within Abnegation. This is Tris’s first betrayal and it makes her very guilty. After the choosing ceremony each faction goes through its own initiation. For Dauntless, the initiates must jump off a building in order to enter the compound. Generally the first jumper is a Dauntless born, but Tris is brave enough to go
As a team, the goal of this presentation is to reveal to the class, how the Necklace can relate to modern day society. In order to understand and apply the reading to modern day society, we set the event to take place in court as an exaggeration to a situation that can be solved behind closed doors. By questioning the characters in the story, each will slowly reveal how the reading is applied to our everyday lives (such as modern day mentality, christian beliefs, and moral standards between friends).
Beatrice (Tris) Prior joins Dauntless and made new friends. She volunteered to take place of Albert when Eric tells Four to throw knifes at him. She could have gotten killed and hurt by the knife, but she did so anyways. She gave up her own life to protect Al, even though she was afraid. “The last thing I want to do is stand in front of that target, but I can’t back down now. I didn’t leave myself the option.”(Page 162) This shows that she values her friends more than herself so she sacrificed her life in order to protect her friends. Tris’s mother got herself killed by brain washed soldiers in order to get Tris to safety at a basement where some of the Abnegation citizens were hiding from the soldiers. “I’m going to distract them. You have to run as fast as you can.”(Page 443) This quote supports self
I really had to take a had look at both my characters and decide what are their ultimate goals for this book. What motivates them to continue on or fight when they need to? What values do they have and why? Who is important to them ultimately who would they live or die for?
In "The Necklace" the authors choice of words, or diction, is very well articulated. I enjoyed this story because the narrator, Guy de Maupassant sets us so much suspense with the tone of the story. Madame Louisel essentailly loses a valuable item, or so she thought, and goes to major extents and even life-deminishing problems to just make it seem like she was not responsible enough to take care of a necklace for a night.
The theme of the first half of the novel is friendship. Friendship is a very important aspect in many people’s lives. Deborah doesn’t realize this until part way through the novel. The first time we see friendship in the novel is in chapter five when Esther is telling Dr. Fried that it has always been difficult for Deborah to make friends.
Examples are some themes in this book are when Tris gave her life up so that her brother could live. Another example is when four chose to keep all of his memories instead of letting them die along with Tris. Things I really enjoyed about this book is the story line itself, it almost makes the story feel real. I also enjoyed how they escaped a city they once loved to find somewhere new outside the wall that surrounds the city. Things that I disliked was the ending. I really disliked the ending because Tris was killed off. It disappoints me that Veronica Roth would kill off one of her main characters especially when the character she kills off is Tris. I would not recommend this book to anyone. This book was not that great, I feel Veronica Roth could’ve done a better job at making it more exciting. Although I would recommend the first book of the series Divergent and the second book of the series Insurgent but Allegiant was one of the books I was not pleased with
I thought this book was well written. It had a good plot with a couple twists and turns thrown in there. The plot of the story also held many different types of emotion. Therefore, it was sad at some points, happy and exciting, or even surprising at times in the story. I also thought that the book gave off a strong message/theme that applies to the real world. Next,
“One choice decides your friends, one choice defines your beliefs, and one choice determines your loyalties— forever. One choice can transform you.” (Roth). All human beings have the power to make their own choices. Making a single choice has the ability to change people’s lives dramatically and to enable people to grow more mature.
“She so much longed to please, be envied, be fascinating and sought after” (de Maupassant 67). The main character desires to be at the center of attention, she wants to be coveted by others. In his fictional short story titled, “The Necklace,” Guy de Maupassant writes about how the lusting for more may cause people to be blinded and unable to see/value the treasures they already have. The story begins with an introduction of a lady who daydreams about the happiness that materialistic yearnings can bring her, forgetting her situation and social class. After taking her husband’s recommendation to borrow jewelry, specifically a diamond necklace, from her close friend Madame Forestier to wear alongside her dress at the evening reception, the main character later discovers that she had lost the necklace. Following their failure to find the necklace, Madame and Monsieur Loisel devise a plan to borrow money to replace the necklace with another and in doing so, fall into years of debt. Moreover, Maupassant uses direct characterization, imagery and situational irony to further depict why you should be grateful for what you already have before it’s too late.
"Faction before blood"(43). Tris Prior was born into the Abnegation faction. When they turn sixteen they have to take an aptitude test which decides which faction they belong in. then, the next day at the choosing ceremony then pick either to stay with their family in the faction they were born into or pick another one to permanently live in. Tris Prior is a dynamic character because of her looks, actions, and speech.
“She was one of those pretty and charming girls, born, as if by an accident into a family of clerks” this is what Guy de Maupassant started “The Necklace” off by saying (Maupassant 221). Also, this helps describe the main character and to give the readers a visual of Mathilde Loisel. “The Necklace” is a short story that Mathilde Loisel, the main female character, wants to be a higher class than she really is. Mathilde’s life drastically changes one night after she loses the necklace. Guy de Maupassant incorporates his use of the social class into the short story.
