Are Superstitions our negative heritage? By: Shailja Parashar What are superstitions? In Wikipedia superstition is defined as “Superstition is the belief in supernatural causality—that one event causes another without any natural process linking the two events—such as astrology, religion, omens, witchcraft, prophecies, etc., that contradicts natural science.” It is a belief which is not based on scientific knowledge; it is driven by mysteries and magical stories. The word superstition itself means blind faith or belief in something influenced by one’s behavior in some magical or mysteries way. Also, in Hindi language superstition is called as “Andh vishwash”, which means blind faith; moreover in Gujarati language it means”Andhlo Vishwash” which also means following the custom or the tradition blindly without any scientific proof. So, it is quite complex to understand superstition in the scientific context. Scientists have done various researches and studied about the psychology behind the belief but sometimes, it is unbelievable how few practices are drawn and continued till now as opposition to superstition was never questioned in the contexts where gods and deities existed. Heritage is something which is inherited or passed on from generations to generations which we get or which we receive from our descendents. Heritage is something which defines us and gives identity to us. The value attached to it, the significance, the materials many things are considered and then something is titled as our heritage considering various discourses of heritage. Also, they are categorized in tangible heritage and intangible heritage once they are acknowledged as our heritage.
