There are five different approaches to health promotion, each of these have different aims, methods and means of evaluation they are not guidelines but individually reflect different ways of working. (Naidoo & Wills, 2009.)
The Medical/Preventive model is scientific and targeted towards high risk groups, the main aim is to prevent disease and reduce morbidity and premature mortality. The approach is broken down into three stages these being: Primary prevention- The first stage of the approach aims to ensure people are aware of risks and try to prevent disease through encouraging individuals to take the right steps towards good health. Secondary prevention- This stage is about preventing the growth of further disease, by using methods such as screening for early diagnosis. Tertiary prevention- The final stage is about reducing disease or illness in the individual and ensuring that recurrence of a disease is prevented.
The behavioural change model encourages individuals to adopt healthy behaviours into their lifestyles in order to improve their health. The individual has to take responsibility and want to change their health behaviours, health professionals are there to advise and educate them how to improve their health through this change.

This approach is based on change through educational methods which are provided by health professionals, such as ‘Making Every Contact Count’ (MECC) aims to encourage people to lead healthier lifestyles, by providing advice and support for behaviour change.
