In general, the healthcare system has been faced by a lot of trends, which have left the healthcare providers with less option but to move in haste to accommodate the trends in their day-to-day activities. All aspects of the healthcare system have been affected, and this paper reveals specific trends in long-term care and health promotion.
Change or Die by Alan Deutschman explored the complexities involved with changing an individual’s behavior. Initially, the article touches on changing behavior in regards to an individual’s health; stating that a relatively small percentage of population utilize the majority of healthcare resources and cite the major cause for usage is in the treatment of disease processes resulting from excessive behaviors such as smoking, drinking, over-eating and lack of exercise.
Health is defined as a state in which human needs are met in an autonomic way, and is not limited to the absence of disease or disablement (V. Henderson). Optimal health is a lively, self-motivated equilibrium of physical, intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and social well-being. The concept of health promotion delineates the method of empowering people to increase control over, and to advance their own overall health.
Health promotion utilises theories and models to guide practice. A theory is the general principles of a framework of ideas in regards to a particular topic. (Merriam-webster.com, 2016) A model is a set plan of action based on theoretical ideas to achieve a set goal. (Merriam-webster.com, 2016)
