Introduction: As long as there have been civilizations, there have been stories, myths that are told to children. These stories are usually the basis of the cartoons characters except some which are from creator’s imagination. This story telling is a means of not only comforting and amusing a child, but of teaching the child the societal norms of their nation. These are memorized by children and remembered forever. The average American child watches 20 hours of television per week, that is 5,000 hours before first grade. Most children between the ages of 3-6 years old can even turn on the television and start a DVD by themselves. I am guilty of allowing my children more TV time then they should have, but I guess that is because I enjoy watching it myself. There are many hidden messages in children’s shows that I was oblivious to until now. For instance, in the show “Rugrats” Charlotte Pickles, Angelica’s mom never had time for her, always on the phone and working. Ethnic stereotyping is another message sent in Speedy Gonzalez’s cousin Slow Poke Rodriguez which is lazy, slow, and dim witted. Morality is also affected by these shows. Most every little boy
Furthermore, the children will start to show aggressive behavior or start to behave like what they see on TV. (Bandura & Ross 1963) Another argument put forward by opponents could be that children have a choice on what to watch and how long they watch television. However this argument is unrealistic because most children do not have self discipline. They would rather watch something entertaining than a documentary about nature or history for example. They would rather watch the latest “Rambo” movie which is...

Television is especially influential on the children of today. Thirty years ago, not every home had a television; they were considered a luxury that only the rich could afford. Today’s society is heavily influenced by television. The violence disrupts a child’s learning process and can alter the moral beliefs that an older person has. Children view more violence on Saturday mornings than any other time. The cartoons aimed at little children influence youngsters to mimic violent acts because their parents do not fully explain the effects of the stunts. It is pathetic that in such a technology based society, such a simple thing as television can have a negative effect on people.

As a child I read novels, magazines, and newspapers. Adults often commented how odd it was to see a child under the age of 10 years old that enjoyed Time magazine, People the daily newspaper. Reading newspapers was where I first became familiar with comic strips. When my father and mother were done with the daily paper I would take it and read it from front to back. I can still remember how the papers ink would leave my hands stained and the distinct smell the paper had. I felt very grown up sitting with the daily paper. The horoscopes, cross word and comic strips were the best part for me. As a child The Peanut comic strip was my favorite. The Peanuts introduced me to comic strips. I was already a fan of Snoopy and Woodstock and was amazed to find something geared toward children in an adult newspaper. Seeing The Peanuts characters in movies, television cartoons, and on children’s apparel was the first time I experienced how a comic strip could come to life much like a Disney book.
