However, some people argue that having a system of a year-round school year is not very beneficial. Although there are many studies that support year-round schooling, there are also many studies that don’t. Many recent studies have found no significant connection between year-round schooling and improved student achievement. For example, a review of 39 studies found that modified school calendars have very small, insignificant, effect on achievement (Cooper, et al., 2003). Another argument that is made for having a traditional calendar is that despite year-round schooling generating strong feelings, it can also generate negative feelings in that it is disrupt to family life. Having a traditional calendar allows families to spend valuable time together and go on a well needed vacation. The traditional calendar allows students to relax and refresh themselves and get ready for next year.
Furthermore, switching over to year round schooling can prove to be more costly than the normal school year. First off, the budget for a year round program, when compared to a traditional program, is much larger. There are more materials, such as school supplies, to be bought, a larger cost for air conditioning, and the increased expenses when a facility is used year round. One of the main concerns is that the life of a school becomes considerably shorter. Usually, in the summer time schools are under repair and made ready for the next year. However, with a shorter summer break, there is not enough time to renovate schools. This will lead to the need of newer facilities more often. Moreover, the largest expense is in hiring new teachers. Not many educators sign up for the year round schooling program and those who do, expect larger salaries than regular teachers do. “The biggest budget increase in a year-long program is most often due to
Reason #1 According to the National Association for Year-Round Education, students will be able to advance more rapidly if they did year-round schooling. A by-product of summer break is the dividing of classes based on age. If schooling was year-round, there would be less distinction between one year and the next. This only teaches us to work with people from our generation. If we had year-round schooling we could advance quicker and work with people from different generations, just like how it would be in the future with jobs. Also, the constant learning environment takes away the emphasis of when the student started school and instead emphasizes skill

Have you ever thought about how year-round schooling can be beneficial to students? In today’s society, many school districts have been switching from a standard school year to year-round schooling. Year-round schools follow the basic 180 day school year, but the days are more spread out throughout the year following the 45-15 method. Forty five days of school, followed by fifteen day breaks. Year-round schooling is beneficial to many because it prevents students from gaining unwanted weight and causes less stress for teachers and students.
Is Year Round Schooling A Better Option Than Regular Schooling? Year round schooling is better than regular school because, it allows the kids to retain more information and not lose what they learned, they also allow them to graduate earlier with higher retention levels. In discussion of Year Round Schooling, one controversial issue has been whether year round schooling is a good idea or not. People believe that year round schooling is a good thing and that it will increase academic achievement levels and benefit the students more than anything else. Students will also be able to advance more quickly since the schooling is year round, they have less to forget since the breaks are shorter. On the other hand people seem to believe that year round schooling takes away from the students and gives them less family time and less of an “Outside of school life” (NEA). In the research of year round schooling it shows that absences are most likely to be higher since it is year round. Their view is that we think that many students can benefit from year round schooling, and that is has more benefits than anything else.
One disadvantage of attending a year-round school is that it complicates family life. This is due to the fact that in a family where “one child is at a year-round school and his or her sibling is at a traditional school, they may have separate days off of school. Then the parents may have to get one kid ready for school and prepare activities for the other child, who is at home. This also makes it very difficult to plan family vacations.”
Did you know that all year round schools are the same length as regular schools? As of now are school day length is roughly 180 days, the all year round schools are roughly 180 days long. The only reason why people think that you go to school longer in a year round school is because you only get a month off in the summer, the rest of the time is spread out between our Easter and Christmas holidays. Pros of year round schooling would include longer breaks on holidays, for example, instead of getting two weeks off during the Christmas holidays we might get three weeks off for Christmas holidays. Another pro of year round schooling would be would be, the school would not be empty for two months at a time, when the school is empty for two months at a time the owner starts to lose money because they are still paying for water and power bills even though nothing is being used. A con of all year round schooling would be you don’t graduate from school earlier than all of the other schools, just because you only get one month off in the summer doesn't mean that you still learn for an extra month. Year round schooling holidays are just separated more compared to just having two months off during summer and a week or two off during holidays. The final pro of having year round schooling would be not having the school closed for two month at a time. One of the worst things about year round schooling is summer holidays, the person who pays the bills for year round schooling is not getting
Even though kids in year round school learn more over the summer than the kids that are on the nine month school calendar , but the kids in the nine month school calendar learn more during school then the ones in year round school. The article says, "We found that students in year-round schools learn more during the summer, when others are on vacation, but they seem to learn less than other children during the rest of the year," said von Hippel. The problem, von Hippel said, may be that year-round schools don't actually add more school days to the school year. The total number of school days and vacation days are about the same for both systems - about 180." If kids in the nine month school calendar are learning more while they are at school then they might as well stick with not having year round
School has been around for a long time and has changed a lot. School was probably different for your ancestors, and what we know today is different than what it used to be. Some changes are good, and some are not,People across the country have different opinions about whether their school should switch to year-round school or not. Florida should not switch to year-round school because it makes it harder to plan sports activities or vacations, and students can’t concentrate as much at school with so many breaks in the way. Although year-round school offers more time for learning more and less reviewing, there are many more benefits from the original school schedule.
In conclusion, these are the reasons why year round school will not help a child. Along with these problems there are more such as attendance, making school fun, and taking away the lessons children learn on their own. It is unfair making a kid grow up so fast by putting them in a classroom all year. Kids have summertime for a reason like just having the freedom, learning more about independence, and exploring, year round school is taking that away from them. It may seem like school goes fast but adding more days brings
With the frequent breaks that come along with year-round schooling, this helps the students and teachers to not become overwhelmed by being overcrowded. Just like schools with a traditional calendar, year-round school students attend 180 days of school. The only difference is is that year-round schools have a multi-track system that consists of four different tracks. The way this schedule works is that while one track is out of school for a fifteen day break, three other tracks are in school for 45 days. Once the group that was on a fifteen day break have returned to school, one track will be sent out on their fifteen day break. ("What Is A Multi-Track Year Round Calendar?" 15). The three month vacation many kids get is not such a good thing. This is because over the course of three months, children forget half of what they had learned previously. Year-round schooling provides children to retain information much better by having shorter, more frequent breaks. A comparison was done between three year-round schools and three standard schedule schools to compare how much knowledge was gained by the students by the end of the year. The three year-round schools had gained 10.05% more knowledge of math and 10.52% reading skills by the end of the school year. The standard schedule school had gained 7.71% more knowledge of math and 8.91%. ( "Year-Round School Statistics" 8).
