Standards Based Grading (SBG) is a form of grading that differentiates from Traditional Grading in the fact that you are told exactly what you’re doing well and what you’re doing wrong, replacing letter grades. You want letter grades, right? You want that A+, right? Traditional Grading is beneficial to students and should not be changed. It is beneficial because you can’t get a good job later in life using SBG, it tells you whether or not you are doing well right away, and it improves self-esteem.

My first reason is that you can’t get a good job later in life if you use SBG, because you can’t get into college. You can’t get into a good college because you don’t have letter grades, and colleges look at your GPA. If you can’t get into college, how …show more content…

See, if you have a low grade, it’s not very fun. But if you raise that grade to higher grade, it will boost how you feel about your intelligence, making you try even harder to do things. It also helps you set personal goals (Bull), like someone that’s usually the “C Student”, setting a goal to try harder and get an A. It also offers friendly competition between students to see who can do better (Shore).

So, according to Alfie Kohn, letter grades are harmful, and “The best teachers and schools replace grades (and grade-like reports) with narrative reports – qualitative accounts of student performance – or, better yet, conferences with students and parents.” Sure, your parents know what you’re excelling in and falling behind in, and so do you, but Traditional Grading gives it to you straight, just, you are doing well, or you are doing poorly.

So, overall, Traditional Grading is the best option and should be kept, for getting a good job, knowing if you’re doing good or bad, and it improves self-esteem. So yeah, SBG tells you specifically what you’re doing wrong, but Traditional Grading lumps it all together. So yes, use Traditional Grading, since it’s clearly better than
