Jane Pittman was an independent woman who had an interesting attitude and personality. She survived until the age of 110. Her life was hard at times, she has been working at plantations most of her life and she lived with no parents in her life. She is a spunky lady and has a lot of character. One characteristic is Florence is brave. She is a brave person because she overcame everyone telling her she can’t do it. She became a nurse and back then nursing was a bad job. Education has not always been available to African Americans. During the time of slavery education was very limited as not many people were educated, especially blacks. Schools for blacks were often destroyed and those found teaching them were usually killed. A lack of education was one way that whites were able to keep control over blacks along with violence to make people scared to challenge their treatment. The first character trait the Lise has immaturity. On page 226, Lise says “What a baby he is! I am a hundred years older than he.” This shows that she believes she is being more mature than her husband because he is knowledgeable about sheep. The narrator also said on page 227, “She remembered Red Riding Hood's wolf, and felt a pleasant little thrill running down her spine.” This shows that she is still thinking
The reader never sees another side of her in the story, her negative and hateful manner is present throughout it’s entirety. While not the most pleasant character, her personality is used extremely well to accentuate the others’
After I have read the articles and watched the video about the Sarah Baartman and the other African Women , I found out there are some similarities and the differences in their life. First, the Sarah Baartman, she is the beginning of the discrimination. She is a Black women from the Khoisan, South Africa. Base on the special and specific characteristic of the Khoisan. Sarah Baartman’s skeleton and the structure is not seems as normal as the other people. After the Khoisan has extinct, Sarah escape to the Cape Town. At there she has been found out by Hendrik Cezar and Alexander Dunlop. They notice that at that time (1810), most of the European are really interesting in the Black People, they know it is a chance and Sarah is their fortune , then they convince her and brought her to London. Sarah Baartman then being exhibit like a slave to many different places. She brought the Europeans’ attention because she was different from English women. “ She was different because she had a larger buttocks than one would find in most British women. And for this they considered her to be freakish”. She makes a lot of money to the Hendrik Cezar and Alexander Dunlop. Sarah Baartman doesn’t notice that she has been discriminated and treated unfair, because this is her only choice, if she choose to stay at the Cape Town, she will also be treated as a slave.Later on, after Hendrik Cezar and Alexander Dunlop dead, she meet another man called Henry Taylor, he brought Baartman to Paris and sold
