Question 1) Differentiating Leadership and Management From the various readings, it is hard to differentiate and define the differences between a leader and a manager. Yukl in his book Leadership in Organizations explains that over the past 50 years, there have been varied definitions based on title, occupation, position, behaviors, and traits (p.2). Therefore, we can attempt to define and differentiate leadership and management with what they do and their scope of influencing followers. Yukl defines leadership as being “the process of influencing others to understand and agree what needs doing and how to do it and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives” (p7). We can see from the above definition that a leader has “direct” and “indirect” influence in getting employees to accomplish a task (Yukl). On the other hand, a manager leads teams and individuals to complete certain tasks in a more direct manner. A leader’s actions have both immediate and long-term effect, but managers are more concerned with the short-term goals. A good leader is also a good manager; but a good manager is not necessarily a good leader (Yukl, p.6). A manager has his or her eyes focused on the short term, is “risk-averse”, and values stability.
