By definition load balancing means the ability to spread the load of processing for an application over a number of separate systems for an overall performance increase in processing in coming requests. This seems very simple and conceptual very easy to think about the process; just splitting up the load helps it get done faster. But although this concept may seem simple enough, there are many factors that can add heavy levels of complexity. When servers were pushed to their limits the initial thought process was to beef up the system such as adding more ram, upping the processor, and increasing the storage space. However these measure only took the scaling so far. At some point, you would have again maxed out all the hardware platform and its capability. Also beefing up the server meant substantial down time and in the exploding world of commerce that was not a viable option. Before Server Load Balancing was a technology or a viable product, site administrators would and employ a load balancing process known as a DNS round robin. DNS round robin uses a function of DNS that allows more than one IP address to associate with a host name. Every DNS entry has what is known as an A record, which maps a hostname, such as www.example.com to an IP address, such as 111.222.333.444. Usually only one IP address is given to a hostname. With DNS round robin, it is possible to give multiple IP addresses to a host name distributing traffic more or less evenly to listed IP addresses. For instance, let’s say you had three web servers with IP addresses of 111.222.333.444, 111.222.333.445, and 111.222.333.446 that we wanted to share the load for the site www.example.com. The end result is that the traffic destined for www.example.com is distributed
