The Four Meanings of Islam

The word Islam means to surrender or to submit. In religious terminology, it means to submit to the will of God or to surrender to his will. Islam does not only mean the religion that Muhammad (S.A.W) was given, but all the prophets brought the message of the same Islam before the last Prophet (S.A.W).

The religion Islam can be categorized into four parts:
• Existential Islam
• Universal Islam
• Historical Islam
• Legal Islam

Existential Islam

The submission of the whole of creation to its Creator. There are many theories and point of views about this, because not all submit to the God or obey his orders. Non-living things are bound to do so, but humans have their free will and they decide to either obey or disobey the God.

Universal Islam

Universal Islam means Obedience. Obedience of Allah as well as his messengers and the prophets and the message that they brought.
Surrendering to Allah Almighty and living up to the terms he gave us is called Universal Islam. In a broader sense, it means accepting the message that Allah sent us through his prophets.
"He who obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you as a watcher over them."
[Holy Quran 4:80] It narrows it down for the followers to respect the message of Allah Almighty. In all the eight Islamic verses in Quran, it is not specified about the Islam that we think it is today. It may refer to all the messages combined.
Islam has existed since Adam come to this Earth. All the Prophets brought the same message of Allah from time to time. So as soon as someone has totally surrendered and submitted and obeyed Allah, in complete sincerity and as a result has achieved total and complete peace in this life and in the
