Riana – I was surprised to see how inventions were created in the late 19th century and how many industries started to do well. This includes the following and many more:
The first chemical battery was invented in the 1800’s by Alessandro Volta; the game of basketball was invented in 1891 by a Canadian physical education teacher. The first game was played in Springfield, MA, on March 11, 1892. The telephone was invented in 1876 by Alexander Bell. “The Hall Braille typewriter was invented in 1892 by Frank Haven Hall” (‘Inventors and Inventions from 1851-1900 - the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century’, 2000) Cotton candy was even created during this era in 1897 by two inventers William Morrison and John C Wharton.
One example is the Barbie Doll. “The Barbie Doll was invented by Ruth Handler who is the co-founder of Mattel” (Ruff). The Barbie Doll’s “full name is Barbie Millicent Roberts and she is from Willows Wisconsin” (Ruff). Barbie was invented to be a fashion model and was originally sold for three dollars. Another invention that is still around is McDonald’s. “The founder of McDonald’s is named Ray Kroc” and the restaurant is named after two brothers by the names of Dick and Mac (Ruth). By the year nineteen fifty-eight McDonald’s had sold their one hundred millionth hamburger. He named McDonalds after the brothers because he was inspired on how successful the restaurant was. Diet soda was another invention that is still used today. The Kirsch Bottling Company was the first company to successfully make diet soda. The company made the “first sugar-free ginger ale” (Ruth). Diet soda was originally made for diabetics at the Jewish Sanitarium for Chronic Disease. The next successful company to make diet soda was in nineteen fifty-eight and was made by a company named Royal Crown Cola. Royal Crown Cola Company named their diet soda Diet Rite. These inventions were and still are hugely impactful on how we and why we make the inventions that we
In my opinion, the automobile and the utilization of electricity have been two of the most important inventions in United States history. The invention of the car expanded our horizons in the fact that citizens were able to travel, but also because people could live in places other than the city. Also, the utilization of electricity has become a part of life that we would not know how to live without. Electricity has allowed for businesses and homes to run in a convenient and efficient manner. Without electricity, we as a nation would have very little technology.
One of the funniest although interesting inventions I stumbled upon was, sliced bread! Bread was probably made about 12,000 years ago, by mixing grains and water. It was probably tough and was cooked by putting hot coals on it. It wasn’t until about 1912 that Fredrick Rohwedder had the idea to create a bred slicer. All the bakers he talked to complained that the loves would go stale. So Rohwedder created a wrapper. He went to a Bakery in Battle Creek Michigan; they loved his idea and started making pre-cut loves. (CBC4Kids: Sliced
world war one. There were new inventions: a bombing company, soaring stock market, up beat
The 1920s often referred to as “roaring twenties” is one of the most remarkable periods because of technological advances, and scientific discoveries. Many of the inventions made during the 20s such as Insulin, Penicillin and Traffic Signals have saved numerous lives. With the invention of Vacuum Cleaner, Washing Machine, Electric Dishwasher and Refrigerator household chores have gotten much easier. Due to the advances in technology and scientific discoveries made in the 1920s, inventors and scientists today are able to study the previous work and take the invention one step farther (Inventions in the 1920s).
2. One of the leading innovators in the production and marketing of goods at the turn of the century was
In the year 1790, the United States had begun to make a name for itself. The United States was ending its own revolution and the world was evolving around it. The country’s new found freedom created a need for self-reliance. The United States was out to prove its worth, that its institutions, democracy, and military were worth the efforts of so many. During this time the number of inventions created throughout the world was astonishing. Inventions like: the cotton gin, batteries, cupcakes, crackers, gas turbine, and bicycles are just a few inventions that were created during this time period. Donalad W. Banner, U.S. Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks, wrote The Book of Knowledge where he explained that before the patent was created
Penicillin and insulin were discovered which allowed the first treatment available for diabetes possible. The Band Aid was invented in 1920 by Earle Dickson. You might think that it is a common sense invention but that is not so. Today you can use band aids from a paper cut or sliver to a deep cut or possibly laceration. The iron lung was a huge advancement in medical technology as it assisted those who could not breath properly and kept them alive like life
In the 1900’s, inventors were very motivated to push their developments into society and make their creations known. Some popular innovations include the escalator, the very first radio receiver, teabags, the electric washing machine, refrigerators, disposable razors, the vacuum and the first synthetic plastic called BakeLite, used for packaging. All these products have become household items
There are many causes and effects of America’s Industrialization, some of the main reasons include: migration to cities, improved transportation, and laissez-faire philosophy, while the primary effects generated by these causes include; consumerism, expansion of the market, and changed working conditions.
In the early 1860’s, new inventions and technology in the United States would completely evolve during the Civil War. One of the several technological advances at this time was the telegraph and it changed the outcome of not only the war but the future, by providing faster communication between the President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln and his Union Generals. This essential apparatus was constructed by Samuel Morse and Lincoln was the first president to communicate efficiently to his generals. More importantly, this device increased the Union’s chances of winning the war since the Confederates lacked the technology that allowed information to transmit to their own troops.
There were many inventions in the decade of the 1920’s. One of the inventions were that Henry Ford invented the Model-T automobile. It became so famous that each family in the U.S had one car. This automobile made life easier for workers. They didn’t need to live close to where they worked anymore. The automobile also made it easier for people to visit their relatives who didn’t live as close to them. Because of this invention, they started arranging various highways. Not only did the Model-T automobile have an impact by making it easier for people to travel places, but it also affected life during this decade by increasing road construction and motivating oil industries.
1. Describe some of the events and scientific discoveries that shook the late nineteenth century’s confidence in the idea of progress. What effect did these events have on music, literature, and the arts?
Many great innovations that benefited people came to earth in the 19th and 20th century. These new creations vastly improved people’s way of lives by making things easier and faster to do while some provide news and knowledge in a flash. The amazing ideas were formulated by brilliant inventors so that they could address the current needs to prevent time consuming tasks and at the same time deliver good results. Through these notable wonders which we often use were the computer, television, radio and telephone people were able to live fully and efficiently. We tackled about the most useful things and how did they become our everyday need and without these said
During the 18th century, advancements to European thought commenced being wide spread throughout the continent. These advancements, known as the Enlightenment, urged Europeans to look beyond what they had previously known and to expand their knowledge, in order to reform their societies in political and economic matters. Enlightenment thinkers believed in human ability to understand the world in which they lived and to conform it to their needs. They advocated many methods of economic reform including the application of ingenious rational methods to preexisting social and economic practices. Due to advancements in thought throughout Europe the enlightenment was prepared to challenge preconceived intellectual and theological principles. As a result of the aforementioned desire of expansion of knowledge and the challenges this expansion brought forth, the 18th century encountered various views of religion that emerged in Europe pertaining to preceding religions such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. However, these views were not limited to preceding religions, as a new religion known as Deism originated from the conclusions and discoveries of philosophes.
