A quilt, wall, and a cat is more meaningful than you may realize… “Of all the nations in the world, the United States was built in nobody’s image” (Boorstin, 3). Meaning, different languages, religions, and races is what makes up the U.S. There can’t be a specific image if we are the ones who make it up. Coming together as a country to accomplish anything can be shown by a quilt, wall, and cat. A quilt is a multi-layered textile, traditionally composed of three layers of fiber, just like the United States. The United States is made up of three important factors, language, religion, and race. “That's because it was built of bits and pieces that seem discordant, like the crazy quilts..” (Boorstin, 3). In the story Once Upon a Time the wall was a blockage from unity. “You are right, said the wife, then the wall should be higher..” (Gordimer, 14). This relates to the wall because, the wall symbolized not having freedom. The witch in the story made it seem like you had to keep building the wall higher, but as we all know, witches are evil. In all bad things come good, meaning, there was a cat in this story. On the other hand, everyone loves freedom, but in the story Once Upon a Time, the cat was the only one who got it. “The whitewashed wall was marked with the cat's comings and goings..” (Gordimer, 15). The cat could leave the house whenever it wanted, while the little boy was always trapped inside his home. The wall tried to block unity from the little boy, but the cat proved everyone wrong. The cat is more than just a furry little creature… it was a symbol of freedom. In the final analysis, our country can accomplish anything by coming together and. A quilt symbolizes unity, the wall symbolizes a blockage of unity, and the cat symbolizes the freedom for unity. Unity is important because without it, we wouldn’t be a strong country. We all need to stick together. Who would have ever thought a quilt, wall, and cat could mean something much
According to the narrator, "he was the most striking figure in Starkfield, though he was but the ruin of a man. It was not so much his great height that marked him, for the 'natives' were easily singled out by their lank longitude from the stockier foreign breed: it was the careless powerful look he had, in spite of a lameness checking each step like the jerk of a chain"(11). Although he wasn't dangerous by nature, people still respected and sometimes feared him. He had a commanding air about him that everyone noticed. The cat is used to be symbolic of Zeena. While Zeena was away, the cat was constantly underfoot and in the way of Ethan and Mattie.
In “The Century Quilt,” Marilyn Nelson Waniek utilizes several literary techniques to represent the speaker’s undying heritage through her family heirloom that binds generations with one another. As an indication of the diversity and complexity within her family, the speaker goes into depth about the immense effect her Meema’s blanket had on her growth into a woman and the etching along her own quilt that represents her Native American pride. With the use of evocative imagery and symbolism of her culture’s oppression, Waniek depicts the speaker’s remorseful tone towards the recurring theme of absence within her family, that forces her to rely on the quilt for a sense of comfort and guidance.
In her essay, “A Quilt of a Country,” Anna Quindlen states, “Once these disparate parts were held together by a common enemy, by fault
In the story “A Quilt of a Country” by: Anna Quindlen, she talks about how the nation has came together because of immigrants
The 2 exerts, A Quilt of a Country and The Immigrant Contribution are total opposites but have to same meaning behind them. A Quilt of a Country focuses more on the places immigrants come from and how they all make American culture. Although “The Immigrant Contribution” focuses more on what immigrants brought to the U.S., and how it changed our country. But together they have a totally different meaning behind them, that no matter where we come from, what we look like, or how important our contributions are we are all American.
Well, there are not as many walls being sat on in this story as I imagined there would be so do me a favour and draw a wall on a scrap of paper. Any wall will do as long as when you look at the image it says ‘WALL!’ Feel free to use any accent you like when your doodle says ‘WALL!’
The wealthy people of that time were the only ones that could afford the expensive fabric that was imported. The quilts displayed the fine needle work of the maker. During the 1800s in many parts of the country, before a young woman got married and had a family, she would have to make a baker’s dozen of quilt tops. The engagement quilt collection had to consist of 12 utility quilts, undoubtedly pieces and one great quilt for her bridal bed. After the engagement, she would make the last step to turn her tops into finished quilts. In the early 1990’s, once again became a popular hobby for many people. Quilting became popular because back then people loved the quilting process and how the quilts turned out to be.
I also came to know different patterns of quilts that brought into culture through combining different styles and introducing new ones. These are about ‘piecing quilts’, ‘diamond shaped pieces’ for quilts and ‘the rising sun’ styles. Since the different styles were prevailed at different cultures, women from different tribes merge designs to create a new one. The designs are creative arts of textile from various parts of the world and every quilter had ability to create a unique one like, different colors, patterned fabrics, solid fabrics and placement of fabric pieces, use of embellishments over
Crazy quilts, made from assorted pieces of fabric and stitched in seemingly random patterns, were popular between the late 1800s
These quilts that were made differed from the past quilts that were made. These quilts were more elaborate and it took much more time to make these. At this time there were two popular fabrics, whole cloth quilts and medallion quilts. The whole cloth quilt or counterpane, as some like to call it, is typically made with single pieces of material. This material is on top and the back of the quilt, the decoration is padded or cored and there were less elaborate design. Medallion quilts were originally from Europe but was brought to America by colonists. This quilt is made of a central motif and it is surrounded by many boarders. The most modern form of quilting is patchwork quilting. This type of quilting is still used to this day. Patchwork quilting involves separate elements being pieced together, using different designs and fabrics, to make the final design.

It covers topics ranging from how to choose fabrics and colors, piecing techniques, hand and machine quilting, and even how to set up a simple "design wall" to experiment with your quilt before you sew it. The book is arranged in an alphabetical format, which at times can be a bit confusing if you are looking for a particular subject. But the Index at the back of the book is extensive and you can find the page number of the information you 're looking for quite quickly. It is the depth of information that is so extraordinary about this book. Editor Ellen Pahl brought together a team of 60 well-known quiltmakers to assemble the book, including historians, technical writers, textile specialists, quilting designers and teachers, and even quilt show judges. Each one contributed sections of the book written from their own expertise and insights, and everyone contributed tips and tricks to making your quilting easier and better. The squares of a quilt are hand picked by the maker specifically for the receiver of the blanket. The squares may be old vacation t-shirts to give to a college student going to live in the dorms for the first time away from home. They could be various shades of pink and used as a baby blanket for a newborn. Whatever the squares are, they are sewn together tirelessly
Throughout the story, the narrator has shown that he has a dark side, which is brought out by the cat. He lets something he dislikes get on his nerves, and in doing so unleashes the vicious side of himself. The cat represents something pure and honest, which angers the narrator
Quilting has different meanings for different people, but all quilts have a unique appearance and tradition. “What makes art is its life – pulsing and shining with the energy and intentions of its creator. The art of quilting glows with a respect for all generations that have come before – putting thread, needle, and cloth together with vision and love” (Wilson 7). Starting out in antiquity as a necessity and a work of art, quilting has changed over time, but it is still practiced in a myriad of cultures around the world.
