Criminals are amongst us and we must do whatever it takes to protect our world. This assignment will identify, define, and discuss three key social issues that contribute to the need for criminal justice practitioners and how those issues impact my role as a criminal justice professional. The three social issues discussed in this assignment are substance abuse, domestic violence, and racism. Two-three examples will be provided to help illustrate and support my position.
The first key social issue that contributes to the need for criminal justice practitioners is substance abuse. There is no clear-cut definition of substance abuse because it has many different names and very different meanings. Here are some examples dependence, addiction, obsession, etc.…I can simply say it is a craving, thirst or even an excessive desire for any substance. It is defined as "intimate violence or partner abuse" (Erez, 2002 para 3). This social issue contributes to the need for criminal justice practitioners because law enforcement is usually the first responders for victims of domestic violence. It also impacts my role as a criminal justice professional because those first responder interventions expand beyond merely separating and counseling the individuals involved. Now developed criminal investigations are conducted. If police are called to a location and it is suspected that domestic violence has taken place it is probable that all injuries are photographed, physical evidence is collected, witnesses are interviewed, future harm is assessed, and victims are referred to protective services for imminent safety and other
