What Caused Europeans Imperialise In Africa

Many states view collecting use tax on smaller purchases as burdensome, therefore states have customarily attempted to collect a use tax only on big-ticket items that require licenses—such as cars and boats. Many states over the last several years are increasing enforcement efforts of the use tax laws to get the state population to pay the taxes due in an attempt to combat internet ordering. The realities of limited resources as well as the complexities involved with tracking down minor purchases and demanding that a use tax be paid are limiting the collection efforts.

As Europe’s economy and standard of living rose, the need for more land flourished as well. Europe sought to split the various parts of Africa during the Berlin conference (without the approval of the Africans, of course). Eventually, Europe successfully stole most of Africa from its rightful owners. The greedy Europeans showed pretentiousness towards the colonies in Africa and wanted to seize territory in order to utilize their available resources while displaying supremacy over the other races.

Prior to the movement of European Imperialism in Africa, a major law was passed. In 1807, the British government banned the Transatlantic slave trade. As a result, in 1833, slavery as a whole was completely demolished. Slavery was a very profitable trade for not only Britain, but many other European powers. Without the slave trade, many European nations were looking for a new way to expand their power of others. Therefore, many European nations switched their focus and claimed their share of the African continent, in order to continue their economic and social dominance (Document A).

The primary cause for imperialism in Africa was the Industrial Revolution. Because countries such as Britain needed more materials to make their products, and they needed more markets to sell products in. They took smaller countries to meet these needs. Europeans had needed raw material to manufacture goods but in order to manufacture goods they needed raw materials (Document C).Western factories had a high demand for more raw materials which has decreased the amount of power the other nations have had.The industrial revolution allowed countries to manufacture goods in return for raw material. The Europeans colonized colonized many parts of the world but the most colonized was the continent Africa. The European explorers started imperializing Africa after exploring into the interior of Africa and finding the resources that African countries had. What is imperialism? Imperialism is the policy of taking control of another country. There were three main reasons for European imperialism in Africa: Political reasons, technology, and economic reasons.

European imperialism reigned over Africa and trapped it's citizens from freedom to save their own social graces. Africa was imperialised by European countries for their natural resources, Nationalism, and European leverage. The driving force behind European imperialism in Africa was the natural resources. Africa’s natural resources were desired by European countries.

From 1500 to 1800, the Europeans already had their eyes on Africa, although not for the purpose of imperialism. Over the next century, slavery was abolished and Belgium began by establishing the Free Congo State in order to make money. Soon, many other European leaders began to realize that Africa was rich with natural resources (Background Essay). The main forces driving European Imperialism in Africa were the capabilities of the European countries’ economies and the opportunity for more wealth and money.

The European powers that were in much need for resources during the 1500s through 1800s were Great Britain, France and Germany. During 1500 and 1800 Africa seemed like an impossible feat to conquer because of malaria but this wouldn’t stop the persistence of the leaders of France and Great Britain. The idea of exploring and conquering new land meant more to these leaders because of the motivation to keep their national security strong and keep their economy stronger. However, after some initial exploration of Africa, the Europeans soon realized how economically important this area was, and how much they could profit from it. At the time, European countries had only small colonies in Africa, but after they realized that they could make money from the resources in the inner regions of Africa, they wanted to invade the African regions and assume control. During the Berlin conference, The European powers decided that they were going to spread the three C’s (Christianity, Commerce, and Civilization) in Africa. To do this, the conference had three aims “ Ensure free trade for all nations throughout the Congo, to ensure free navigation for all countries on the Niger River of West Africa, and agree to set rules by which the Europeans could proceed to divide the rest of the continent.” (Part II: The European Conquest, Pg 11).
