What did Confucius teach the people of China?

Chinese culture was strongly influenced by Confucius. He taught people of China that everyone must accept their role in life and responsibilities towards others.

Social Teachings

One of the things that Confucius taught was that people should have compassion and respect for one another and to not treat others in a way that they would not like to be treated. "What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others," he stated.

Political Teachings

Confucius believed that the key to successful politics lay in every man carrying out his own duties as related his position within the social class and scale. "Good government consists in the ruler being a ruler, the minister being a minister, the father being a father, and the son being a son," Confucius said.

Parents of the children to be married would meet with an astrologer, who would determine by the times and dates of the possible couple's births, the children were compatible. As women's thoughts were considered unimportant, the father always had the final word on who his daughter would marry. The morning after the wedding, the girl would offer tea and bow to her new husbands parents as a sign of her loyalty and that she belonged now to her husbands family. Once married, the girl would live with the husbands family. She was required to obey orders of his family -particularly his mother. A girl often became a servant of the mother-in-law and was absolutely forbidden to disobey her. She then gained more of the family's respect is she gave birth to a boy. The birth of a boy was alway celebrated much more than the birth of a girl. If families were very poor, they would sell their daughters as servants to better-off families.
