What Do You Do When Your Back Is Up Against The Wall?

Mr. Todd asked “What do you do when your back is up against the wall? Do you fight or freeze? ”. Sitting in his office with walls covered in college pennants from all over the United States, Mr. Todd an educated man with a bright smile was going to see to it that I made a choice that day. I could choose the path of my future or let my past lead the way. At a young age my parents divorced. I was raised in a single parent household by my father who had no formal education outside of high school. We did not live in the best neighborhood. In fact, the school district I attended had a 57% graduation rate. Financial backing for education was secondary. I was bright but disadvantage. Brick by brick my proverbial wall was built. How was I to overcome with all signs pointed to me falling through the cracks?
As I leaned in clearing my throat, my response to him was, “I’ll fight, Mr. Todd I want to fight.” He nodded his head in agreement to my life changing decision. The journey to stop the generational curse of under achievement within my family began. The road to overcome would prove to be long and hard, but determination and perseverance carried me through. My father, educators, and counselors like Mr. Todd became pivotal in helping me to see the potential in applying myself in school. It certainly paid off. A full scholarship to college was granted to me and I positioned myself towards a career in the healthcare industry. I successfully beat the odds and became the only college…
