Confucius, during his day, inspired China and much of the world, with his ways of life, teaching people keys to living healthy. In this quote "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand," there are many ways to interpret and understand by what he meant of it. Whether it means it is easier to learn by 'doing', or that memories and stronger when you are a part of it and 'do' something, or just a way of life stating that it is possible to do many things and be included, I am not sure of what the quote truly means. Although I am not certain, Confucius back in his day taught a ways of life; leading me believe that this particular quote he meant that it is easier to learn by 'doing'. Even though all the ideas of the quote are linked with one another, this particular meaning, it is easier to learn by 'doing' appears to be the most accurate compared to all the others. …show more content…
Throughout my fourth grade experience, most assignments and class sessions were associated with listening. I barely remember fourth grade as it was not only a transition into the last year of elementary school but a boring period of time for me. The one assignment I do remember from that time was when we as a class had to color in the different continents, that has not yet washed away from the edge of my brain, due to the fact that it was a 'doing' memory. Even though listening is not the best way to learn and understand throughout a long term period of time, it's short term effects can be quite
Confucianism has been a part of Chinese culture for over a thousand years. Many who have studied Confucianism would say that it is not a religion. It is better described as a philosophy or moral code. The philosophy of Confucianism comes mainly from the speeches and writings of Confucius, a great Chinese thinker and educator. He believed that Humanity, Rite, Neutrality, Virtue, Education, and Cultivation were the basis of human behavior. In addition, Confucius felt that this philosophy was the best way for people to behave and interact with others in society.
“He who learns but does not think, is lost! He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.” - Confucius
The first statement was well known in Chinese traditional culture, no matter elder people or primary school students, it is seems that everyone knows this statement. The master said “To learn, and then have occasion to practice what you have learned—is this not satisfying? To have friends arrive from afar— is this not a joy? To be patient even when others do not understand—is this not the mark of the gentleman? ” It means that it is a pleasure to doing review work from study, keeping those knowledges in mind by reviewing them over and over again, so that one’s can understand more deeper and brings out more new ideas, when it get to the certain level, ones can become the teacher. It is a pleasure that friends whom from far away to come to visit you, it is better way to knowing each other better when something in common. When other people does not understand your thought quite
Traditions & Encounters: Chapter 8, page 185: “Because Confucius expressed his thoughts in general terms, later disciples could adapt
I like your quote but I what find amazing about this quote, is the fact that it emphasizes how people who fail to learn will be condemned to repeat it. Condemned, here illustrates that the past which is hunting will be repeated. For example, many of us have heard or watched movies pertaining to the Holocaust; but there a section of the society who believes or pretend the holocaust never took place. For those people, when this event appears on the horizon the will be condemned because they refuse to believe the first
The quote teaches a valuable lesson too. The lesson it teaches later in life or sooner is that if you just wait, soon it will later happen, you must be patient and later something unremarkable and so valuable you would do outstanding, and once you do that it will or should remain a memory or it should.
With communal responsibility as a core Confucian value, this quote implies that it is one’s duty to preserve nature so that future
The exact quote is, “Give thyself time to learn something new and good, and cease to be whirled around,” (257). In life, knowledge is power, and exposing ourselves to new concepts and ideas always gives us new knowledge for new challenges. One can never be prepared enough for the trials of life, yet the best we can do is keep an open mind to new informations in order to easily bounce back from failures. This is something I believe in heartily and take in whatever knowledge I can from failures in order to prevent it from happening again. This quote heavily influences Stoicism, as the philosophy states that positive and negative experiences should not hinder us, but only teach
In his teachings on filiality, Confucius quotes a line from the Daya saying
"The public be damned!," William Henry Vanderbilt was reported to have said. "I'm working for my stockholders."
Confucius created a system of thinking called Confucianism. If only one word could be used to summarize the Chinese way of life for the last two thousand years, that word would be Confucian. No other person has had as great an effect on the life and thought of the Chinese people as Confucius. He is the most adored person in Chinese history. Confucius claimed no greatness, instead he looked to a past time that he saw as the golden age. He told one of his disciples, "I transmit but I do not create. I am sincerely fond of the ancient. I would compare myself to Old P'eng who was fond of talking about the good old days." Confucius was a transmitter of the wisdom of the past. From his study of Chinese tradition, he gathered the
I loved how the first paragraph ended in “Analects (Lunya) of Confucius”. This person was exiled from his former land and established his own form of government. By doing that, it showed me that he was a bold, smart, fair, and determined individual. Moreover, I truly found that the foundation of his newly formed government was a different approach from the other or typical types of government in that period. His government did the most astounding thing. Not only did Confucius or “The Master” government acknowledge individuals in need and with less power, but it also respected them as well. It basically treated the poorer and less fortunate individuals as human beings instead of slaves or objects that are easily disposable. I really enjoyed
One of the most famous people in ancient China was a wise philosopher named Confucius (circa
This essay discusses the main differences between traditional Confucian values and modern values. Confucian society seems backwards compared with modern society. In the traditional Confucian society, wives must obey every man in the family before she makes any decision on her own. She even obeys her sons. This would never happen in the modern world, especially in the West. Women and men cannot even talk to each other in a normal fashion unless they are already married, or being set up to be married. The author claims that a sister cannot even ask her brother-in-law a question. It is believed to be inappropriate for a woman and a man to speak, and there is even some mention of women covering their faces.
Confucius’s complimentary behavior not motivated his disciples but also set forth the example of decency and citizenship within society. “I can try a lawsuit as well as other men, but surely the great thing is to bring about that there be no going to law.” (Confucius p. 70) Confucius stresses not only the importance of bearing down society with avoidable lawsuits, but also that the relationships between neighbors should be above petty differences and disputes. He continues to encourage the importance neighbors by counseling his followers about the perspective in which we view others. “The man of noble mind seeks to achieve the good in others and not their evil. The little-minded man is the reverse of this.” (Confucius p. 70) The goodwill of which Confucius wishes to implant in his followers is evident in his statements as he encourages optimism and
