Each individual will approach critical thinking with a different opinion or view. This is called Ethical Lens Inventory. Just like any other personality trait our personal Ethical Lens will be influenced by our backgrounds and upbringing. The preferred Ethical Len I use in decision-making is autonomy and rationality. Critical Thinking and Ethics The critical thinking process is very important in your day to day routines. In our business and personal life, we choose right from wrong everyday utilizing our critical thinking abilities. Ethics are morals that you hold on to. Critical thinking plays a significant role in ethics in that it is the process by which we determine for ourselves if something is right or wrong.

The original seven liberal arts and sciences are Grammar, Rhetoric, Logic, Arithmetic, Geometry, Music and Astronomy (Kimball, 1985). Of these, I have taken multiple classes which represent the arts excluding Music and Astronomy. Regardless of the class or subject, the fundamentals for becoming a critical thinker relies on creativity skills, innovation, and inspiration which are an integral part of liberal arts discipline. The courses have been student-centered utilizing discussion questions in a trial and error format focusing on the evaluation of the process and the reasoning. , if not most, have heard of the phrase “use your critical thinking skills” but probably never truly understood what that meant and what it entails. There are seven steps that are used in critical thinking: Identification, research, analysis, application, decision making, evaluation, and reflection. The first step in the critical thinking process is identification which means exactly what the first steps is: identifying the problem or issue. The second step is research which is researching what the problem is, how it could have come about, and any possibilities to overcome the issue at hand. The third step is analysis, this means that one must analyze, or evaluate the smaller bits of the problem and piece together how everything works hand in hand with each other. The fourth step is application. Application simply means applying the general moral principles to the problem one is trying to fix, deciding which ones are most relevant to the issue, and how they conflict with each other. The fifth step of the critical thinking process is decision making. Decision making is choosing the most effective and most ethical choice from the available options and using it to fix the problem and be able to justify the decision. The sixth step to the critical thinking process is evaluation. The evaluation step not only asks the individual if the choice they made was the most effective decision; but was the decision is morally and ethically sound for their predicament. If you are being intellectually honest then yeah, most critical thinkers will have considered the obvious up to the not so obvious. Practiced critical thinkers will have an even wider field of available possibilities. To your question. It doesn't take a physicist to arrive at the conclusion that a major media network would have uniform policies as they pertain to dress code, provided wet weather protection and the placement of the company's logo. In this particular instance, once you concede CNN provides its employees with similar apparel then you can move on to the next variable or anomaly to discern credibility of the report.

Critical thinking and ethics go hand and hand with the responsibly of one’s professional and social interactions. Critical thinking is a six step process one takes when making a decision and/or is given a new idea or concept. Ethics, while it is different for each individual it is the morals of right and wrong. Unconsciously when an individual makes a decision, their ethics and critical thinking processes are what guide them to their answer and/or conclusion.

To exists and live on our terms we must convert our life into a creative project. Only by doing this can we sufficiently challenge ourselves to reach our full potential and figure out what it is that we want to dedicate our life to and how we wish to leave a mark in history. To make our life into a creative project, we must consistently set goals and to be a critical thinker by asking questions. Unfortunately, some obstacles prevent us from living our life on our terms. Dependency and legitimacy are why others have authority over us; however, once we are forced or reasoned to do something, be someone, etc. they lose that power, and that’s the time that we must take action. We are consistently ruled by others and the “norms” that society established whether it is knowingly or unconsciously. The fact that others rule us can eventually cause us to feel alienated and once we recognize that isolation, we begin to rebel.

For this paper I was asked how critical thinking and ethics will affect my career as both a student and a professional, in order to answer that question I must first answer the question of what is critical thinking and ethics. One thing that is certain about success in any and all aspects of life is that you must have at least basic critical thinking skills, and a strong foundation of ethical belief. Each day we are faced with new problems and issues that requires us to use our critical thinking skills. No matter how small or big the issue is, you always have to think and analyze the situation and come up with the best method that will help solve the problem. Sometimes critical thinking can seem like a hard goal to achieve but in fact, it is not. According to Vincent Ryan Ruggiero, in order to be a successful problem solver you must have factual knowledge and expertise in thinking (Ruggiero). I have not always been a good critical thinker, and there has been times where I did not know where to start to solve a problem. I would get frustrated and just give up on whatever it was that I could not solve, which was an example of a poor thinker.

As a Critical Thinker I believe I have the greatest successes in clear thinking and rationally about what to accomplish and what to believe, I can tell when someone is trying to convince another person or myself to perform a bad idea and approaching problems in a consistent and systematic manner. I can also reflect on the justification of their own assumptions, beliefs and values. Although I would like to improve on my weaknesses, they are the ability to think clearly, understand the links and logical connections between ideas, determine the importance and relevance of arguments and ideas as well as recognize to build and appraise arguments and the last one, identifying inconsistencies and errors in reasoning. Relationships come in many forms, such as Independent, Codependent, Causal, Dysfunctional and Correlational just to name a few, but they all are defined in this way “Relationship- the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected.” (Websters,2016). Critical Thinking and Ethics share this same type of relationship; common ground connects them through societal norms, beliefs, and standard work practices.

What is Critical Thinking? Is the process of conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and /or evaluating information gathered by observation, experience, reflection, reasoning or communication, as a guide to belief and action (Scriven & Paul, n.d.). When one applies critical thinking more ideas are develop, fewer mistakes are made and better decisions are reached. When people instead of using critical thinking act on beliefs or without giving it a second thought, the end results are poor decisions and as a result have a disaster at hand. People don’t always use critical thinking, it is not uncommon to hear someone say such remarks after making the wrong decisions; “I just was not thinking”, “I did not think it was a big deal”,

Critical thinking and ethical decision making are crucial for academic success as well as career success. Both critical thinking and ethical choices allow an appreciation of diverse points of view using analytic approaches, create a tolerance for and an appreciation of ambiguity, allow for creative problem-solving, and give the ability to integrate knowledge from diverse viewpoints into unified ideas and strategies. To better understand how critical thinking and ethics impacts our success, we must analyze these skills and how they relate to us academically, and to our future careers.
