To sum up so far it means that if you’re an American citizen, you can be free to do whatever you want as long as it’s legal. Also to be an American citizen to me, it means that if America gets in trouble, everyone in the states should help to defend the US from whoever is causing trouble for the America.

What does it mean to be an American citizen? This is a hard question for me to answer because while I am proud to be a part of a country where I have the right to vote and get an education just like any other person, I am also ashamed to be a part of a country that was built on the racial enslavement and then discrimination of black people for 200 years. So for me, it is both a blessing and a curse to be an American citizen. I don’t believe the whole ‘America the great’ propaganda or the most perfect nation in the world notion either. But I do believe that as a black women there is no other country in the world that can provide me with opportunities to succeed like America.

Civics has been around for a long time since the beginning of government. History and civics can relate to each other because history shows the past, and civics shows how the government has evolved. Citizens should have knowledge of civics because the government makes our laws and rights, and shapes our society.

As I reflect on what I have learned and what it means to be a citizen today I have so many different thoughts. Before I took political science I would say that I did not know much about what it actually meant to be a citizen but now I have more of a complete understanding. The first actually to practice the notion of citizenship were the ancient Greek city states (Bellamy pg.2). Which was an idea that most countries adapted over the years. A citizen is a member in society and participates with other members within that community (Bellamy pg.16).
American citizenship was something that was not so clearly defined in the beginning of the reign of the American Constitution. People called themselves American but it took them a while to define what being an American citizen actually meant. People interpreted citizenship in so many different ways. It is difficult to define the citizenship of any nation so all nations are faced with the task of distinguishing their identity from others. America was one of those nations that struggled to identify itself because for a long period of time, America lacked clear national identity. America also had to identify their civic and ethnic nationalisms because nationalism is a perplexing thing. Most of the definitions for national identity came from the
What does it mean to be a citizen? To the ancient Greeks, a private—uninformed—person was not considered complete, and they were “referred to as an idiōtēs” (Ginsberg et al. 9). Part of the reason why political opinions vary so far from person to person is in part due to the amount of political knowledge that each individual has. A person who stays informed on current political events weekly by reading newspaper articles will be able to understand our current government structure better than someone who hears about political information from other people’s opinions. Valuable questions are whether or not American politics are in crisis, how this applies to California—heavily influenced by its citizens—and what solutions our United States
