What Does It Mean To Be An Auditory Learner?

Hi everyone! My name is Briana and I am an all around learner. I am mostly a Kinesthetic Learner, but also I can learn visually. I am also an auditory learner as long as what I am hearing interests me. Since I was younger, when I had to sit in class against my own will, I always learned better one on one or by doing things myself. If you show me once and let me do it my myself the next time I usually can get it down very quickly. I’ve never been good with lectures, the information hitting my face like water from a water hose is overwhelming and I usually never remember any of it. This always made me angry because that meant I always had to rewrite everything multiple times until it was tattooed in my brain.

I learn best by actually finding something interesting or fun to learn about. I do not really learn by writing things down because sometimes you write something down and it is way more different than the real subject. Listening does not not help me learn also because I daydream a lot and then I do not pay attention to what is being read. Looking at pictures does a bit of the job because it helps you see things and then you will memorize them. Looking at pictures is a better way for me to learn because it is more easier to just see the pictures memorize them and then just go along with the next things. Writing things also helps me learn a bit more by just having at least relocatable notes that will help you with something later on. Sometimes I work fast and slow in my classes, it sometimes depends on how I am feeling because if I am feeling down then I do not feel like doing no work at all and if I am feeling energetic or happy i do my work and i do it very well.

Throughout my fourth grade experience, most assignments and class sessions were associated with listening. I barely remember fourth grade as it was not only a transition into the last year of elementary school but a boring period of time for me. The one assignment I do remember from that time was when we as a class had to color in the different continents, that has not yet washed away from the edge of my brain, due to the fact that it was a 'doing' memory. An auditory dominant learner prefers to listen to what is being presented. They respond best to voices such as the lecturer or hearing their own voice repeating something back to a tutor. This learning style can be catered to in a work environment by one on one meetings, voice recordings or training seminars.

Being knowledgeable about learning styles can be very useful for your academic and professional career. We communicate with our peers and colleagues on a daily basis, so it’s important to understand how each party does so. Just recently, I completed the online “Learning Styles Inventory” evaluation provided by the Baker College Academic Office. The results showed that my primary learning style is “auditory”, followed closely by “tactile-kinesthetic” which I believe is a fairly accurate assessment. For simplicity, the focus of this paper will be auditory learning.

This means that when I am working on something and find it to be easy, I am most likely using a more developed intelligence; musical. Considering my learning preferences and teaching styles, I can say that I prefer to listen rather than reading. The teaching styles I like include; lecture with group discussions, detailed presentations, etc. When I think about the two, I see a connection made based on the auditory sense. I prefer to discuss and hear people and things to stir up different ideas and suggestions, so I'm not stuck with my own opinions. There are many different learning styles, but I’m an auditory learner. To start off with, making sure I listen is very helpful. By getting my ears checked often. It can help in the future. To continue with, reading out loud helps. By just reading out loud helps me be a better reader.Even reading test questions can help me better understand what the question is asking. Additionally, sitting close to the board help so I can hear more clearly. By sitting closer to the teacher I can improve on more things. All in all, now that I know my style I can become a better learner.

As a read and write learner, I like taking notes in class and I read over these notes or copy them out. I take my time to study at my own pace and in a quiet environment, I love studying ahead of time to gather and collect all the information needed to understand and also learn a new task to achieve new skills I require. When I’m listening to a lecture for instance, I like to take notes, make bullet points for my reading, and I also turn illustrations into words and check the dictionary for word meanings for me to understand when I study. I check out information in library, textbooks and handouts for better

My preferred learning style is auditory. I can use mnemonic devices, such as flash cards with audio to my advantage in school. The repetition of the flash cards would help me in science where there is lots of information to remember. Reading the information, text, stories, assignments, out loud would help me to fully understand the context. I can also read my drafting work out loud, so that it is less likely to miss any errors. During class, I can ask my teacher more questions or to explain certain concepts.

I’m mostly on the internet , which is bad I know but everyone likes the internet. I love to go on adventures and explore new things or places with my friends. One thing that I like to do is take pictures of anything artsy that I see. I feel that I am a visual learner. I like to look at examples. Looking at examples helps me better than the teacher just telling us what to do but not showing us examples. I feel as if it helps me more. I’m also an auditory learner. I like to hear some noise when i’m working. It helps me contrast better.Like listening to music makes me focus even more. Even if it’s the littlest of noise. It could be any kind of noise. For years, there have been many theorists who have shared their views on how individuals learn. Such research has determined that individuals have different learning styles. It is important for teacher to understand the learning styles of both themselves and their students because it helps them to relay the subject knowledge to the students. The teacher is in a position where they must be able to assess the learning styles of their students. This means that the students and teachers are both in a process of learning.

Auditory learners retain new information best by hearing it. They to read out loud and will listen to a lecture rather than reading the text. They prefer the speaking on the phone than face-to-face conversation. They are easily distracted by noises. Auditory learners are not able to color coordinate their clothes, but they can explain what they are wearing and why.

Auditory Learners like to learn through listening. They respond well to verbal instructions, songs, listening to stories, taking part in discussion and play, etc

Secondly, these learners also have strong language skills and they have a good vocabulary and usually have a great appreciation for words in general. Not surprisingly, this characteristic also applies to me once again as languages are my strong point and I thoroughly enjoy them. My strong language skills also lead to me being a people’s person and being able to hold good conversations and bringing my point of view across in a clear way. A third characteristic of an auditory learner is that they enjoy and are good at acting and being on stage. Drama has always been great fun to me and if I could I would have taken it as a subject! I’ve been involved in a number of plays and I absolutely love letting go and acting and making a fool out of myself of the stage. Auditory learners are easily distracted by noise and I have noticed that in my life as I get distracted by anything and everything!
