Reputation is the only thing left of a person after passing. The memories one leaves with others define someone after death. This concept would explain why having a purpose, the ritual of death, and sharing stories matter. In Hamlet, William Shakespeare questions the value of life and the importance of the individual. He argues that a singular being ultimately does not matter unless their story is shared. A person who cannot find meaning in life, or cannot live up to what is expected of them, will struggle to make decisions. In other words, “If you lose your purpose… it’s like you’re broken” (Selznick 374).
