According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, professionalism is defined as the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person. A few pages to the left, efficient is defined as productive of desired effects, especially productive without waste, an efficient worker. A few more pages to the left, cordial is defined as showing or marked by warm and often hearty friendliness, favor, or approval, a cordial welcome.

“Professional is not a label you give yourself – it’s a description you hope others will apply to you” – David Maister. This is one of my favorite quotes about professionalism. Numerous other quotes talk about professionalism being about a mindset, or a commitment, which it is, but in reality, professionalism is about how other perceive you. First let’s start with what it means to be a professional. The typical definition of a professional is a person competent or skilled in a particular activity.

My definition of professionalism is when a worker is trustworthy, approachable, knows how to handle the situation, being on time, organized, positive attitude, dependable, committed, respectable, and empathetic. To be a professional, we have to possess the skill, leadership, character, duty, and trust to perform the duties of that profession. Character, morals, and values are a few qualities that also make up professionalism. There are basic characteristics of professionalism that are custom norms in our society, such as being respectful, punctual, honest, and showing competence.

In order to define the word professional, it is helpful to comprehend general characteristics typically associated with the term professionalism. These terms consist of poised, qualified, presentable, well spoken, and confident. Through experience and what I have been taught, first impressions can be the key to success. To accomplish this task, dressing in mature and conservative clothing with clean maintained physical appearance gives off the idea that you are put together and responsible. Next to first impression are one’s credentials. In most scenarios, having earned at minimum a high school diploma. In order to reach a higher standard of professional it is helpful to have received a Bachelor degree from a notable college or university. With many factors playing into defining oneself as a professional, look at the steps to success is how to begin.

What is Professionalism? When first thinking about this one might conjure up images of professional athletes such as, Steph Curry, Cam Newton or Sidney Crosby. Others might think of of professionals in the arts, perhaps Yo-Yo Ma or Michelangelo. While each of them are professionals in their respected field, this paper will be discussing professionalism in the workplace. Professionalism comes down to two basic ideas: treat others with respect and give your work the respect it deserves. Joshua De Vera Bautista said it best when he said, “Since you cannot always carry and display your diploma. Kindly act like you have one. Professionalism. Include that to your dictionary.” The goal is for everyone to be seen an outstanding employee and acting professional helps tremendously with that, especially with a first impression.

Professionalism is a term that has existed for a long time. Its definition varies from one individual or era to the other. For some, being professional is seen as dressing elegantly at work, or doing an excellent job. For others, however, being professional is translated as having higher degrees or other certifications. The answer to this question will vary and it depends on the individual and their beliefs. Personally, I think it is more important to maintain professional standards as opposed to just giving an appearance because it clearly falls under the code of ethics. I have an extremely broad definition for professionalism. Overall, I believe that professionalism is a multidimensional term that refers to many ideal qualities associated with respectable, professional individuals. These individuals have chosen to conduct themselves in the best ways possible in all areas related to their career and work. In my opinion, individuals exhibit professionalism when they are highly self-disciplined, competent, experienced, and well mannered. In addition to this, I believe professionalism refers to those that are good decision-makers and individuals that strongly adhere to ethical guidelines. I believe the term also characterizes those that strive to serve the needs of their employer and coworkers before their own

Webster’s describes professionalism as “the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.” I can see why people would say that about professionalism. However, I personally don’t fully understand the true meaning of professionalism. That might be because professionalism wasn’t an important part in my life. But now that I’m beginning to grow and learn more about my career and my future, professionalism is something that I’m going to have to work on in order to gain the skills to be respected in the business world.

I initially thought that professionalism meant outer appearance and appropriate language/behavior. I still do believe that this is a crucial part of professionalism. I am a firm believer in conducting myself in a manner that will represent my family, school, and students well. One example of my determination to act as a professional both in and out of the classroom is to keep my social media not only private, but free from inappropriate pictures/posts;
