Each individual has a specific culture that can they can use to identify oneself. I discovered my own cultural identity with the help of many aspects I have faced throughout my life. Culture is an important role in everyone’s life. Culture can be discovered by seeing how different an individual is from someone else. It can also be seen even when you don’t realize it. My family have been a major impact on discovering my cultural identity. My cultural identity would not exist if it weren’t for previous experiences I have encountered up until this point. My cultural identity is involved in many aspects of my life because of how my family influences my culture, how my view on culture differs from everyone else, and how society views me.

This may lead us to believe that a word may have multiple meanings and interpretations. Each of these meanings can be used in different aspects and purposes. As a result, many people believe that the concept of a word may be described, but the definition cannot be fully defined. In the nursing career, for example, there are many words that have been using, but these words have different meanings in other usages outside of nursing. The words stroke, heart, culture, power, and or sensitivity has a meaning in the medicine while they can be interpreted differently in other fields like sociology, in anthropology, and in religion
In this paper I will begin by defining personal culture and national culture. After, I will then elaborate my own personal and national culture. I will continue to talk about the subject with the person that I have chosen for my cultural group, my mother, and I will identify her personal and national culture. Lastly, I will talk about my own personality and how it has a connection with my own natural culture; knowing this is important, it lets us know who we are, and how we act with people who are from different cultures.
When I think of the word “cultural identity”, I think of myself, and what makes up who I am as a person. My cultural identity influences everything about me, from the moment I wake up, to the minute I rest my head on my pillow at night. My culture influences the way I eat, speak, worship, and interact with people. However, I am not only affected by my own culture, but others’ culture as well. I am fortunate to have an extremely rich heritage, and I couldn’t be prouder of my cultural identity.

When someone asks me what is my cultural identity, there are a lot of things that come to my mind. For example, one of the first things that come to my mind is the how people see me which is by being hispanic. In the same way, I also think about the fact that in addition to being hispanic I am also Salvadorean which sets me apart from the idea that every hispanic is mexican and they are all the same. In the first few seconds after I am asked about my cultural identity, I think about who I am and what makes me me. I think about how I was raised and how different I might be compared to everyone around me. I am a straight male who does not have any disabilities. I do not have a high socioeconomic status, but I have sufficient. Being catholic, I have no problem exercising my religion as I please and that really sets me apart from many because not everyone identifies with the same cultural identity as I do. Some people encounter many obstacles due to their cultural identity, obstacles that I might not face which is why I feel like my cultural identity has affected different aspects of my life such as my social development, family, education among others.
I would describe my culture as being Mexican-American. I am a seventh generation born in the U.S. on my mother’s side and the second generation born in the U.S. on my fathers. Being Catholic is an important part of my culture. We believe strongly that the matriarchs of the family have the responsibility to bring up their children in the church and make sure they have all their religious sacraments to help put them on the correct path that leads to heaven. Family is valued in my culture; especially elders. I have a second aunt who is now 103 years old. She was never married or had children of her own. Every year on mother’s day she is showered with visitors, food, and gifts. She has babysat four generations of children in our family and will
The idea of cultural identity is your feeling of belonging to a cultural group, the things that separate you from your culture and the things that bring you together with your culture. Even though members of a culture share some beliefs they aren’t exactly the same, this is the concept of cultural identity. These things that separate you from your culture, forge you into a dynamic and productive member of the same culture. The culture that I best identify as is the American culture. The aspects of this culture that shaped my personality is the music, growing up listening to modernized genres of Rap hip-hop, pop, and soft rock music. Another aspect that shapes my personality is food I eat from my culture. Being an African-American, my cultural foods that I grew up eating was known as ‘soul food’, which included: cornbread, black eye peas, sweet potatoes, collard greens, and fried chicken. In addition, the banal foods within my cultural society also contributed to my personality, such as, pizza, hamburgers, hotdogs, and other common foods. In addition, my cultural religion also contributes to my society, I grew up in a Christianity background where my grandmother would constantly read and teach me the bible and its lawful commandments to abide by. This aspect significantly shaped my personality.
There are many aspects that make up our culture that help convey our sense of identity. When I think of culture, I think of how people live or act, but it is more than that. Some of the elements that make up culture identity include race, religion, and even age. No one has the same cultural identity, which makes each of us unique. Although having different cultures may cause conflict, it makes up who we are. My cultural identity is mostly impacted by language, but that is only one of the element that makes up who I am.

Many culture have been altered including my own, and some have been created due to the rise of technology. Cultures differ so greatly that someone belonging to one culture may not agree with the values of another, which then causes social and ethical issues. Growing up I had some sense of my culture from a young age. My family has stayed in touch with its Polish culture which is a huge part of how my family celebrates. In my childhood, I grew up in a rural area with a small school, meaning I had close knit friends that practically never changed and we all shared the same concepts of culture. Being Catholic played a big part in my morals and how I live as well. As I’ve grown up I have changed my culture to suit my beliefs and it is still changing now that I am in college and my concepts of culture are being challenged.

Being able to interact with him and learn about who he is and what his life is like really showed me how different people can be. Though one may assume certain stigmas about a culture does not mean that everyone within that culture share in the same beliefs and values.
