Step 1:
In this Pentecostal painting, the Holy Spirit is descending over Jesus and the apostles. This is shown through the ‘tongues of fire’ over the apostle’s heads symbolising the holy spirit. According to Acts 2:1-4 everybody who believed was in one room, then with a gust of wind and ‘tongues of fire’ suddenly appeared upon their heads. Therefore, in this biblical painting, the Holy Spirit is descending over Jesus and the apostles, this is shown through the ‘tongues of fire’ over their heads.
Step 3:
The symbols are significant to the Pentecost…
Tongues of fire: The Tongues of fire symbolises when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles when they were immersed in the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:3)
Different Cultures: In the Pentecostal picture each person wore different types of clothing symbolises all of the different cultures and languages that the apostles spoke about.

The Hands: The hands symbolise that god/ Jesus had sacrificed himself for everyone, that is why you can see the holes where the nails were pierced into his hands.
Step 4:
T- The holy spirit descending to the apostles was significant for the early church because it gave people hope that there was still a god even though Jesus had died.

The various gifts of the Holy Spirit as listed in Scripture are conveyed according to the will of the Holy Spirit to every man for the eventual purpose of the edification and building up the church body.
Acts of the Apostles chronicles the rapid advancement of the Gospel by way of the gift of the Holy Spirit. “The Holy Spirit in the Acts of the Apostles: The Charismatic Community in Mission” takes into account the narratives succeeding Pentecost including Spirit Baptisms from Samaria to Ephesus (Acts
Beginning with the hands, you can see how most apostles to the left of Christ are pointing to his direction, this gives the viewer hints of how the handing off of the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven is the focus of this painting. Moreover, it can also be seen how Saint Andrew who is behind Jesus Christ on the left, has his hands crossed like an X. The way Saint Andrew has his arms crossed and how head tilts slightly to the left with his eyes closed shows how the cause of his death was through crucifixion on an X shaped cross. Additionally, the fifth person to Christ’s left, the man with a purple gown and darker skin holding his hand inside his purse is believed to be Saint Judas since he betrayed Jesus Christ for 30 pieces of silver. It can be seen how the facial expression belonging to Judas possesses an air of unpleasantry compared to the ones of the other apostles. All of the apostles including Jesus Christ have halos on their heads, this is used to demonstrate who has been canonized as a saint. Furthermore, Perugino portrayed the men at the ends of the fresco with their backs turned towards the ends of the painting in order to force the viewer into scanning all of the apostles and while being able to easily look back to Christ and Peter without losing
It is also important to see their obedience Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem (acts 1:12) Jesus told them to return to Jerusalem and wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit, and that is exactly what they did. They heard what he had sad and responded to what Jesus told them to do, even though He was no longer physically present with them. This was major key in ushering in the power of the holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit came onto the scene because Christ told his disciples which trickled down to every generation of believers that the Holy Spirit will be a comforter to all mankind. The Holy Spirit is an important part of the Pentecostal Movement for he will give men a gift to speaking in tongues after being baptized. Albert Simpson was a leader that began the Pentecostalism religion in England in the year of 1875. Mr. Simpson was a teacher of the divine healing in which comes from the Holy Spirit. Charles F. Parham was a one of the first men that started the Pentecostal Movement in Topeka, Kansas in the year of 1901 (Yong, 2004). Parham asked his Sunday School class to tell him and the class the purpose of the Holy Spirit and why after being baptized receiving the Holy Spirit is important (Synan,
On Pentecost, there was a loud noise from the sky, the then tongues of fire appeared, and then the apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit. This enables them to proclaim the good news of Christ. I think that Luke chose to describe the Holy Spirit as wind and fire because the Holy Spirit appeared to Moses in the
St. Basil challenged the readers of his day to consider the role of the Holy Spirit the same way they considered the Son to the Father. His writings influenced the churches theology to believe and give credit to the Holy Spirit as part of the trinity.
The genre of the book of Acts chapter 19:23-41 is written in the narrative form, and is set in a time when the people of Ephesus worshipped a goddess who they said fell from heaven. During this time period the apostle Paul began his travels preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus and upon making contact with some disciples he asked them if they had received the Holy Spirit since they believed. They answered him saying they did not know of the Holy Spirit. He also was concerned if they had been baptized in Jesus name, they answered no, but they had only received John’s baptism. Upon hearing this Paul explained to the people of Ephesus that John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance, but they should be baptized in the name of the one who came after John, Jesus Christ. Therefore when they heard this they were baptized in Jesus name, and after Paul laid his hands on them they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues and prophesy.
50 years ago, one of the most significant parts of Christian history has just toke place. Pentecost is a Jewish feast that is celebrated about 50 days after the Passover meal. This event started when, the apostles gathered in a house and were about to pray, when suddenly a terrific, gust of wind came about the room. Immediately, all of the apostles saw tongues of fire above their heads. The apostles claimed it to have been the Holy Spirit that was sent from Jesus Christ, the saviour that is creating wonders from above in heaven. The apostles then began to speak in all different languages and the crowd thought that the apostles were drunk. Without hesitation, Peter (one of the apostles) stood forward and explained that the apostles were not
The book of Acts begins with Jesus ' parting words to His apostles before His ascension to the right hand of God the Father. In His opening statement Jesus promises the Holy Spirit, and He does this by distinguishing the coming of the Spirit from the baptism of John. “For John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (Acts 1:5) John had testified the same of his baptism, “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:11, also in
When Christ was preparing to leave the disciples he gave them this Command “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my father promised, which you have heard me speak of” Acts 1:4. The disciples probably were confused and in distress hearing that there leader was leaving. However, I am sure when Jesus reassured them that he was not leaving them alone put them at comfort. Jesus Spoke to the disciples and told them “He will pray to father and that he will give them another helper that he may abide with you forever John 14:6. Jesus also told the disciples the night before his death that it was to their advantage that He goes away, for if He doesn’t go away the Helper will not come John16: 7. This Helper that Jesus was referring to was the Holy Spirit. The word Holy Spirit is translated in Greek as Paraklétos, which means counselor, intercessor, one who encourages and comforts. As we read the bible we learn that the Holy Spirit is a person which dwells in us, which in turns fills us. “Luke also records Jesus identification of the Holy Spirit as the good gift of God for his Children”. Jesus was even filled with Holy Spirit the bible speaks of “the Lord is led out into the desert by the Holy Spirit to be tested
Today we will be studying three spiritual gifts that were given to the Apostles. These gifts have now ceased. We see in 1 John 4:1 (King James Version), “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” The Apostles received some gifts for a temporary period of time. I would be deceiving you to say that this is not a divisive issue in Christendom. However, we must not be frightened away from understanding this issue.
The Holy Spirit is the third person that eternally exist with God the Father and God the Son. “equal in power and glory, and is, together with the Father and the Sone, to be believed in, obeyed, and worshipped. The Holy Ghost is a gift bestowed upon the believer for the purpose of equipping and empowering the believer, making him a more effective witness for service in the world. He teaches and guides one in all truth (John 16:13; Acts 1:8, 8:39). 1 The baptism of the Holy Spirit absolutely essential because He gives the believer power to witness live a separated live in this world full of temptation. There are many characteristics of the Holy Spirit. This paper will discuss the intercession, teaching,
What is the Holy Spirit? Some believers would say it is a part of the Trinity, others would say that it is a gut feeling that convicts a person of doing wrong. Some scholars would try to describe the Spirit as if it was a person of a physical being. There are assumptions that the Holy Spirit became present after Jesus’s Crucifixion or that there is no purpose for the Spirit. In referring back to my notes during class and in small group discussion. I will be addressing the proposed questions and explaining what I have learn throughout the semester by intertwining scripture and life experiences in interacting with the Holy Spirit. To be specific I will define what is the Holy Spirit, its activities, and how it pertains to other people’s lives.
2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
