In the infamous story of Pentecost, there are four things that happen. Loud and violent winds fill the house, tongues of fire rested on each of them, they become filled with the Holy Spirit, and then they began to speak in other languages. Wind, Fire, Holy Spirit, and Languages. Later on in the Bible, Peter preached the gospel where one day, 3,000 people accepted Christ into their hearts. These monumental events in Christianity history happened and they start with wind. This wind, or Holy Spirit, starts her work by entering into the hearts of each of them, preparing them for the further work to come. It was with them back at the beginning of Christianity and still with us today. We need the Spirit to blow through our hearts replacing fear with
Acts 2:1-13 tells the story of Jesus’ ascension and the Pentecost. After Christ left, the disciples felt afraid and gathered to pray inside a room. In the middle of their prayers, a loud blowing sound was heard and tongues of fire were seen on each of the disciples’ heads. The experience empowered the disciples to
Since the Old Testament, the Spirit of God was promised to come to the people of God. The prophet Joel wrote: "And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions." (Joel 2:28 NIV) Nine hundred years later, the Spirit of the living God was poured upon His church in an event named Pentecost. The purpose of the following research is to show the Pentecost as a major point in the life of the apostles, as well as the beginning of the church of Christ.
The Holy Spirit had an immeasurable impact on believers and nonbelievers in the book of Acts. He brought about significant conversions of nonbelievers throughout the text, including the conversions of Saul of Tarsus and the 3000 that heard Peter preach. The Holy Spirit used conviction, repentance, and baptism for conversion in the lives of many non-believers. In the case of Saul the prosecutor, Acts 9:1-30, the Holy Spirit spoke to him while in the midst of his Christian prosecution with instructions to follow His command. Saul was eventually converted, preaching the Gospel with boldness through the Holy Spirit (Woods, 1). Likewise, the 3000 who gave ear to Peter’s speech in Acts 2:22-41 were convicted, led to repentance, and baptized. Immediately following their conviction, their hearts sought repentance and right standing with God. Afterwards, they were fully adopted in to the faith and devoted to the ministry according to verses 42-44 (Woods, 1).
50 years ago, one of the most significant parts of Christian history has just toke place. Pentecost is a Jewish feast that is celebrated about 50 days after the Passover meal. This event started when, the apostles gathered in a house and were about to pray, when suddenly a terrific, gust of wind came about the room. Immediately, all of the apostles saw tongues of fire above their heads. The apostles claimed it to have been the Holy Spirit that was sent from Jesus Christ, the saviour that is creating wonders from above in heaven. The apostles then began to speak in all different languages and the crowd thought that the apostles were drunk. Without hesitation, Peter (one of the apostles) stood forward and explained that the apostles were not
According to the 2nd chapter of the book of Acts, men were gathered together in a room when they heard a roaring wind from Heaven that filled the room. The story goes on to say that the men were filled with the Holy Spirit and they began to speak in unknown tongue much like fire. Pentecostal believers know that the Holy Spirit has the authority over them. The Holy Spirit has powers much different from angels, and demonic beings that may have miracles (Brack, 2014). The believers will speak however and whenever the Holy Spirit wants them to. In this Fire from Heaven essay, one will begin to know the history of the Pentecostal Movement and how important it is to believers, and the affects of Pentecostalism has on Black Africa.
This art pictures Jesus as the ‘Miracle Worker’. This is explained in full in Matthew 12:22-33. This story explains how Jesus sent the disciples by ship back to the other side of the Sea of Galilee after they became caught in a wind storm. When the first saw Jesus on the water they were frightened. They believed he was a ghost. Jesus said to them not to be afraid. In the Gospel of Matthew, Peter "walked on the water" towards Jesus, but doubted himself and began to sink. Jesus reached out and caught him. After Jesus entered the ship, the storm settled, and they arrived at land. Christian teachings consider the story a miracle and displays the importance of faith. Peter didn’t believe he could achieve what he set out to do, and ultimately due to this he didn’t succeed. This sacred story is another example of how religion provides certain ways to live to benefit yourself and others. This interacts with spirituality as these teachings allow people to develop personally and have a better state of mind. The main symbol evident is the light that appears out of the darkness when Jesus appears on the surface of the water. This symbol represents hope as Jesus has come to rescue them from the storm. The light also appeared as Jesus calmed the storm and so the light would be perceived as a symbol for life and happiness as
I went to the book of Acts, there I find a rich theology of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was given to us as a tool that enables and empowers the church of Jesus Christ to live lives that are totally transformed and able to evangelize, spreading the gospel to the world we live in.
It can be said that two events, Agnes Ozman praying in tongues in 1901 and the 1906-1909 Azuza street revival, were what began modern Pentecostalism. Despite its relatively late arrival within Christian history, today “Pentecostalism and related charismatic movements represent one of the fastest growing segments of global Christianity.” Within this movement, there are a large number of believers that understand the Holy Spirit and his “baptism” in a way that differs from what the Church has historically believed.
The Holy Spirit has been a topic of discovery, and debate far much longer than people realize. The Holy Spirit has been influencing people in the Bible, but also in the 4th century. The Holy Spirit like today was a topic of debate even in the 4th century. St. Basil the Great was a man of God who wrestled, defended, and lived by the Holy Spirit. St. Basil was born in Caesarea of Cappadocia in 330 where he was born into a large family, some who were also honored among the saints (Online Catholic). The time period St. Basil was born into was a very significant time for the church. St. Basil was impactful during this significant time because of the training, the roles he took, and the conversations/ writings he had.
The fundamental theme presented in chapter twenty five and twenty six of David W. Dorries book Spirit Filled Christology maintains that Jesus came, not only as a pathway for salvation, but also to lead as an example of the Spirit’s movements and to empower His church with supernatural abilities to further the ministry that He began. In order to expound upon his statements, Dorries uses historical context.
However, in Acts 2:3 God used the prophecy of tongues to signify the torrential out of the Holy Spirit. It demonstrated that the Holy Spirit is about the washing of all tongues. Moreover, the tongue represents the organ of language, and the fire embodies the cleansing supremacy of the Holy Spirit to these additional languages.
On Pentecost, there was a loud noise from the sky, the then tongues of fire appeared, and then the apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit. This enables them to proclaim the good news of Christ. I think that Luke chose to describe the Holy Spirit as wind and fire because the Holy Spirit appeared to Moses in the
Many artists have created visual interpretations of scriptures such as Rev Mark Hewitt -Day of Pentecost. This painting is an accurate representation of Acts 2 and shows this through colour, images and emotions.
Seeing their Master on the verge of leaving, the Apostles were concerned regarding the restoration of the kingdom. By answering that the timing of the restoration is unknown, Jesus had the disciples once again focus on the Holy Spirit. His ascension shocked the disciples still. Again, their focus had to center in the Holy Spirit; thus, angels comforted
