What Does The Word Sick Mean

Grandma’s Aren’t Wise Time really must change the meaning of words! We all know the boring and traditional dictionary definition of what sick means, being physically or mentally ill. What I shockingly learned recently was that not everyone knew what the more modern and informal version of the word sick meant. Words can be a lot more useful when they have different denotations because it adds character to your voice. Trying to explain and convince the other meaning of sick to my 80 year old grandma was like trying to teach an old dog a new trick. I showed it to my grandma, “See according to the best dictionary around, sick means either what one is on test day or crazy, cool, and insane.” “So you’re telling me you have a test today?” “No I’m just saying that the word sick nowadays has much more meaning then back in the 40’s when you were around!” “I don’t buy it, I still think you are just looking for an excuse to skip school.” She said. “Well if you still don’t believe me I’ll find another example.” I said as I flipped through the channels on the TV. American Dad came on and I waited. What do you know I heard it right away, “I'm sick and tired of getting no respect at work” the father said. “See right there the word sick is used again but just in a different notation,” “It means so much more than just being ill.” “Well I guess your right then, but I still don’t believe that you are actually sick.” “Your right grandma, I’m just siiiiiiick.” I shot back. At least I did learn something that day; I learned that overtime words can change meaning a lot. I also learned words are a very useful tool that should be understood within context because they often add character to your
