“Tobacco and alcohol use are behavior risk factors for developing numerous types of cancers, such as long, esophageal, oropharyngeal, and colon. Despite decades of scientific awareness of the causal link between tobacco and alcohol use in cancer, these substances continue to exact a heavy toll on the US population. Furthermore, evidence suggests that tobacco and alcohol used together have synergistic effects on cancer risk” (Rosario, Everett, Reisner, Austin, Buchting, Birkett, 2014, para. 2). Some forms of cancer run in certain families, but most cancers are not linked to genetics that we inherit from our family. Most families tend to have certain risk factors in common such as obesity and smoking, which cause cancer. However in some cases …show more content…
However, let’s take a brief look at the effects of a poor diet when it comes to cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of cancer and many other chronic diseases. Obesity increases the risk of several types of cancer, including breast, colon, rectum, and kidney, among others. Having excess weight typically causes the body to produce and circulate more estrogen and insulin, hormones, which are linked to stimulating cancer growth. Red meats, soda pop, snacks, and foods containing a lot of sugar are all a part of a poor diet. It probably would not hurt to monitor what you eat, so that you are not putting yourself at a higher risk for cancer. “Diseases associated with physical inactivity and poor diet rank among the leading causes of illness in the United States (1, 2) and well determinants in many chronicle diseases including cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes (1, 3-5). Although persons of all ages benefit from regular exercise (5), Americans generally do not meet recommended levels of physical activity (6, 7)” (Lin, O’Connor, Whitlock, & Bell, 2010, para. 1).

One of the most preventable cancers is skin cancer, even though it is one of the most common kinds of cancer; it too can be prevented. You should try to avoid being out during the midday, and stay in the shade if you have to go out for any reason. Tanning beds are just as bad as natural sunlight. Remember to cover up your exposed areas, when you go out you should try to cover as much of your skin as possible. It also doesn’t hurt to get immunized and receive regular medical care. Your local doctor or health clinic offers vaccines that can try to prevent certain types of cancer. There are also plenty of exams and screenings available for multiple types of cancers. The earlier that cancer is discovered is when the treatment is most likely successful. Lastly, practice safe sex!!! You should always limit your number of sexual partners, and always remember to wear a condom. You are more likely to contract sexually transmitted diseases with multiple sex partners. Individuals, who have HPV or AIDS, have a higher risk of anus, liver, lung, and cervical cancer. HPV has also been linked to penis, vagina, and throat cancer, so this could put you at a high risk.

Often times , most people do not think twice about the dangers of skin cancer . The leading cause of skin cancer is too much exposure to the sun. Skin cancer can be prevented , as well as treatable with the help of suns
Smoking added to excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of these cancers even more. A maximum of four drinks a day for men and two drinks for women is recommended. Surprisingly enough, frequent consumption of smoked cured and nitrate preserved meats has also been shown to cause cancer. The codes of 249, 250, 251, and 252 on labels of corned beef, bacon, and smoked sausage indicate that the meat has been cured or preserved. These products increase the risk of stomach cancer and should be eaten in moderation. (http://www.petermac.unimelb.edu.au/DIET.html)
Heredity also plays a role in the development of cancer. If a person’s relatives have a history of cancer, then that person has a higher risk of developing cancer. Genetic variations, particularly those influencing how the body responds to carcinogens, may create a greater vulnerability to cancer.
defense system it can alter a cell's genes to make it become a cancerous cell.
As many as ninety percent of melanomas are estimated to be caused ultra violet (UV) exposure. This includes UV exposure from artificial sources, such as tanning beds. “Strong evidence now links tanning beds to melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer that afflicts nearly 69,000 Americans a year.”—USA Today. The more one tans and the younger one is your risk for melanoma increases. However, melanoma is increasing faster in women 15-29 years old, than in men the same age. Furthermore, 10,000 people die from melanoma. This is mainly caused because of tanning beds. As a matter of fact, a person dies every fifty minutes from melanoma, the second most common cancer. Tanning beds triple the risk of one getting melanoma. In fact, every time one goes and tans, the risk gets higher and higher. Following this further, more people get melanoma because of tanning beds than developing lung cancer because of
We hypothesize that the time exposed to tanning beds, increases the risk of skin cancer. This hypothesis was a way to understand the statement, tanning beds give more harmful UV radiation rays in the shortest time, then being in the sun for the same amount of time. With this we emphasize that tanning beds are bed.
In fact, “People who have ever used a tanning bed have a sixty-seven percent increased risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma and a twenty-nine percent increased risk of developing basal cell carcinoma. People who first use a tanning bed before age thirty-five increase their risk of melanoma by seventy-five percent” (Silecchia). In the past, melanoma mostly affected people in their fifties or older, but today, dermatologists see patients in their twenties and even late teens with this type of cancer. Experts believe this is caused by an increase in radiation from the use of tanning beds. A sunburn or intense sun exposure may also increase a person's chances of developing this deadly cancer. Being in the sun is inevitable, but people can still protect their skin from many forms of skin cancer by doing the simplest things such as applying sunscreen.
In America, there are many studies on the relationship between tobacco use and cancer that was conducted. These studies estimate that about a third of cancer deaths related to tobacco use. Tobacco causes approximately 90% of all deaths from lung cancer and smoking also causes cancer in many other parts of the body like pharynx, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, uterus, cervix, kidney, bladder, colon and rectum. To reduce the risk of tobacco-related diseases, the health educators may find information on the Web site “http://www.nobutts.org” to give their audiences necessary information to help them quit smoking.
Tanning salons turn their attention toward cancer prevention and turn their backs on causing skin cancer. Lavine wrote, "The JNCI review noted that indoor tanning can increase a fair-skinned individual's risk of developing melanoma by 55%. And it can take a mere 10 indoor-tanning sessions to cause precancerous DNA damage, reports a recent review study by a Kings College London researcher (Lavine)." Melanoma is not the only form of skin cancer. Tanning beds play a role in the formation of other skin cancers as
Most people think of tanning as laying under the sun and letting the light turn your skin skin from a lighter color to a darker one. Unfortunately, most people do not know that a tan is a sign of skin damage. Melanin, which is contained within the skin, is responsible from skin pigment and can also absorb ultraviolet radiation from the sun. This radiation doesn't just come from the sun, it can also come from tanning beds. When too much UV radiation is absorbed, the melanocytes can turn cancerous, causing melanoma. To help prevent melanoma, apply a thorough amount of sunscreen to exposed skin, and try and stay out of the sun during the hours of 10am and 4pm when the sun is the strongest. Although tanning under light can be dangerous, sunless
There are many ways that you can get cancer. You can get cancer from smoking, sunlight, your diet, mold, viruses, and inheritance. Out of those factors, the most common cause of cancer today is smoking. All cancers are genetic because they are caused by the mutations that happen to the gene. Some common cancers that are
Skin cancer is a really growing prevalance in the country right now. Most commonly this is caused by being exposed to the dangerous UV rays of the sun or a tanning bed. I like how you said, "Being overly exposed to direct sunlight causes many malignant cancers." I think limiting yourself to the sunlight and maybe going once or twice every month would surely decrease your risk of a cancerous skin cancer, really great work Bella.
Smoking can get you broke because of the hole in your neck that you got from smoking people will not wanna work with you so you will get fired and if you try to get a job they will not hire people that smoke it will also unattract people which will also get you fired

In summary, cancer is unavoidable. Nevertheless, we can do a lot of things to prevent cancer. Staying healthy and keeping fit is prerequisite, then we can take tests, surgeries or chemotherapy to cure or eradicate. Cancer sometimes hide very well, it will be very unfortunate to discover cancer in later stages, and then it will be very difficult to cure. So it is very important for everyone to take an annual physical examination to check whether they are healthy or not. Even though cancer
