What Happens to Dreams Deferred? Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, addresses the hardships of an African-American family living in the projects of post-segregation Chicago. The family aspires to fulfill their dreams of owning a home despite the odds they face. W.E.B Du Bois critical race theory explains the issue of racism and white dominance that not only the family in the play faces, but the African American community as a whole.
American society only allows for African Americans to see themselves only through the eyes of others, according to W.E.B. Du Bois’ theory of double consciousness. Du Bois also claimed that a person’s self-identity is influenced by historical and social circumstances, and in this case for African Americans, the effects of slavery, prejudice and segregation. (Giddens, 2011) In A Raisin in the Sun, the Younger family face their double consciousness. The family’s ultimate goal in the play is to move out of the slums of Chicago to a neighborhood called Clyborne Park. The Younger’s find themselves hesitant about the move because it is a white community. Aware of the prejudice they face prevents them from moving out of their poor conditions sooner. The effects of segregation/discrimination are everlasting, and the family not wanting to make the move unintendedly contributes to the continuation of racial segregation. In Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 play A Raisin in the Sun a number of social issues are both explicitly and subtly exemplified through out the characters experiences and relationships. Living in a cramped Chicago apartment, the Youngers’ display both influential goals and conflicting restraints. Beneatha Youngers is a controversial character; she complicates society’s typical gender roles, introduces the wrestle between assimilation and ancestry of African-Americans, but specifically serves as a paradigm for her generation in the play.
Another theme and issue that arrives from the play A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, is racism. During the 1950’s blacks and whites were segregated. The house the Younger’s purchased was in the Clybourne Park neighborhood, an all white neighborhood. When Lena told the family they were moving to Clybourne Park they stood with amazement. “Mama, there ain’t no colored people in Clybourne Park” (p.734). The family heard of other colored families’ houses being set on fire in this neighborhood, they were concerned that the same thing would happen to them.
“What happens to a dream deferred?” (Hughes l. 1) Langston Hughes asks in his 1959 poem “Dream Deferred.” He suggests that it might “dry up like a raisin in the sun” (Hughes ll. 2-3) or “stink like rotten meat” (Hughes l. 6); however, at the end of the poem, Hughes offers another alternative by asking, “Or does it explode?” (Hughes l. 11) This is the view Lorraine Hansberry supports in her 1959 play A Raisin in the Sun, in witch she examines an African-American’s family’s struggle to break out of the poverty that is preventing them from achieving some sort of financial stability, or the American Dream. Walter would be the so called ‘typical’ black man archetype, he tries throughout the play to fix the family’s problems of his own accord and does not play much into racial problems except simply distrusting the white man. Walter differs from the other two black archetypes presented in the play as his character seems to be less concerned with racial problems and more concerned with the problems at hand. This can be seen in that most of his thought, speech and effort is more concentrated on his venture to open a liquor store to solve the family’s financial problems. The younger family suffers from racial discrimination within their living space, place of employment, and the housing industry. Racism has been going on for a very long time in the United States and will always continue to exist. Racism has not only led to political but also social issues. "A Raisin in the Sun confronted Whites for an acknowledgement that a black family could be fully human, 'just like us."(qtd. White fear.) The setting took place in the ghetto, south of Chicago where mainly African Americans settled. In this division, apartments and houses were overly priced, crowded and poorly maintained. Crime rates were extremely high and most families lived in poverty. Due to segregated housing, it was a daily struggle for black families who had hopes in leaving the ghetto for better lives.
