Many people today arrive in the United States of America in pursuit of achieving the American Dream. What is the American Dream, and what does it mean in today 's culture? The term “American Dream” was established since the Great Depression representing Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness; the very values this great nation was founded upon. The Dream was said to be successful if a person worked hard to achieve his/her goals. Even though prior the American Dream has been terminated however, citizens have transform it in terms of personal goals since the 1930s. Author Brandon King describes the American Dream as an, “Opportunity for each according to ability and achievement”(610). The American dream has to do with the concept of achieving success; being able to perform daily tasks to provide a brighter future for a person, and his/her family. Essentially, if you are passionate enough about what you do, success is always possible even with manageable obstacles. Although, hard work is one of the factors in achieving the American Dream, self-motivation has also made an impact. The reality is every citizen has the opportunity of achievement depending on his/her choices, and access to education.

Before any point can be made, we must ask ourselves, what is the American Dream? According to William Zinsser in his essay, “The Right to Fail”, “The American dream is a dream of getting ahead” (Zinsser 93). To get ahead we have to learn, persevere, and achieve. For most Americans, we live our lives day to day and go through routine after routine.

The American Dream can mean many different things. Each person has a slightly different version of the American Dream. If you think about it, they are like fingerprints, they could be similar, but they are all a little different. Many books mention the American Dream and for this essay I read some of them. Some of the books are Of Mice And Men, The Great Gatsby, The Grapes of Wrath, The Help, and The Death of a Salesman. I have read Of Mice And Men and written about it. I also interviewed my grandparents, my mother, and my cousin who is thirteen. I will also be talking about my American Dream and what I think the typical American Dream is.

The phrase “The American Dream” is relatively old and has a long history, and although its ideas has changed tremendously throughout the centuries, it still holds great meaning behind it. It not only symbolizes financial success, but having the freedom to live independently. For some, living the American Dream means having justice, material possession, or just pursuing everlasting happiness. The new American Dream requires you to earn opportunity, and is has been more difficult for others based on their social standing, ethnicity, and race to obtain; as opposed to the past American Dream which involved optimism and hope for a better life. Each source clearly demonstrates the need for determination and willpower to overcome barriers and obstacles of life.

I am not a bricklayer, but a builder; building upon my parent’s dedication to pursue a better life for themselves and for their children. As the son of a naturalized Arab-American father, whose Palestinian origins show me the meaning of being a minority, and a Palestinian immigrant mother, who inspires me to continue pursuing my aspirations amidst the daunting and unknown road ahead, I endlessly strive to achieve my American dream.

In Conclusion, the American Dream is the national ethos of our nation. Everyone strives for this ideal in order to reach happiness. However this cannot be done unless one works hard and one is smart with choices they are given. Over the past decade, the American Dream is becoming harder and harder

This is in essence the purest form of the American Dream that I’ve seen. It’s an idea that no matter how terrible life is, if you have the willpower and hope, anything can be achieved. This is what the American Dream truly is to me. While it may be true that the way the American Dream is embodied changes through generations, i.e. the fight to be acknowledged in October Sky, the essence is still the same. The American Dream is to be able to live, work, thrive, and be whatever you set your mind to. This essence of the American Dream is everything to me because just a few short months ago the concept of the American Dream meant nothing to me. It was just a thing my mother talked about at dinner, or a fable that seemed to irrelevant to notice, but that all changed when I opened my eyes to the real meaning behind it all. It made me feel like there was a purpose to the chaos, it made it all feel real.

The American Dream is a flawed concept, a deceptive motivator, which promotes fantasy and unrealistic capitalist goals (ideals) of success, while disregarding the immense costs. The American Dream, conceptualized among early American frontiersmen deeply impacted societal thinking and motivation. America meant “more”. More ideas, more possibilities, more space, more land, and finally, more success. This concept is timeless for Americans and aspiring American citizens.

The American Dream drew millions of immigrants from all the world for centuries and as a result, the U.S. is most diverse country in the world. In the past, these migrants were expected to leave their old cultures behind -- such as adopting new, more English-sounding last names -- and assimilate into this new American one. However, people today appear to more accepting of the diversity. Many of those who immigrate to America try to hold onto their heritage, creating subcultures in some areas (Macionis 48). This change is good. Being around people who have led very different lives from each other is a refreshing learning experience.
