What Influences the Fashion Trends?
Introduction
Every generation has their own style; something that sets them apart from the previous generations. So why does our generation choose to wear the clothing that they do? Of course we don't want to dress like our parents, but there are other factors involved in developing the style of a generation.
Marketing, advertising, and the media all try to influence the way our generation dresses. Their reasons are mainly profit based. Whatever the reason, we are a generation that loves to shop.
The youth of today are extremely brand loyal. According to America's Research Group, the use of brand names is the second most effective advertising method when targeting teens. Only the giveaways of products like CDs and posters of popular brand names surpass this. Brand names serve as status symbols. To have Hilfiger or FUBU showing on one's clothing is to be recognized as "cool". And, while sporting those brand names, we are also endorsing that brand. What better than to have everyday kids advertising for a company?
Unfortunately, due to global youth marketing, teen tend to dress much the same. With a large portion of our generation looking the same, a good way for individuals to stand out is through what they wear. While 50% of teens are buying only brand names (Ebenkamp), what is the other 50% buying? Breaking away from brand names, a current fashion trend is the rise of "retro"
History Repeats Itself
History plays a large part in today's fashion trends. Many styles of today copy the past. "Retro" is clothing influenced by styles from throughout history. Technology has had a major impact on the progress of fashion between the 1945’s and 1960’s and beyond. People used to have busy lifestyles before the growth of technology to help them. During WW2, there was a shortage of fabrics and people needed to preserve them. However, once the world got into a stable post-war time which were the 50s, there were more intricate outfits which used large amounts of fabric. Technology also allowed more different varieties of dyes and fibers to be made which added more of a personal touch to fashion and gave a feeling of wellbeing and comfort.

In today’s society, fashion rules the teen and young adult generations. Billions of dollars are spent each year on designer brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Off-White. At the same time that these large amounts of money are being spent of materialistic aspects of fashion, people in third world countries are struggling greatly. Instead of money being spent on expensive clothing, it could serve a greater purpose by being donated to countries who are in dire need. Absurd amounts of money in first world countries are spent on designer brands, while third world countries struggle to even get their hands on any clothing.
The 1920’s, also called the roaring 20’s, was a time of change. During this time period the fashion for both men and women was changing immensely. The aftermath of WWI caused America to enter a vigorous era. As a result of the role of women during the war, many customs and morals were changing. The Stock Market started booming, many new dances and music came about, and women got the right to vote and enter the workforce. Although fashion varied throughout the decade, one could notice a drastic change from the prior fashion.
Fashion is a term commonly used to describe a style of clothing worn by most of people of a country. A fashion usually remains popular for about 1-3 years and then is replaced by yet another fashion. Even though there are a lot of changes in fashion, most people do not easily except the changes.
