Child-initiated play is when the child chooses what activity they want to do without adult help from and very little interruption throughout. The child choses who they want to play with, if they want to play in a group or include an adult with their play. There is no scheduled plan with child-initiated play. Children choose where they want to play, in what area, and choose how to use the resources that are provided for them. Children determine the duration of their play; they choose when to start and when to stop. Child-initiated play is about having ownership of their play.
