According to the National Association for Sport and Physical Education children at preschool level have difficulties focusing on things for more than an hour and should have tasks divided into 15-20 minute activities (Rock, 2017). This is true for most younger children as it will be easier for them to focus and gain more from each activity. They cannot perform either type of play alone as children should be supervised by an adult or reasonably aged older peer, or should be engaged with an adult or peer in the activity. Humans are social creatures by nature and it is even more true in younger children. In this program our child care providers have a hands-on interaction with the children. They guide our early learners through child directed play. The child care staff provides different learning opportunities by supplying an array of activities based on the children’s interests. This program will allow the children an opportunity to become leaders in their learning, by exploring and discovering their play environment on their own, with peers and through guidance from the staff. On Friday I spent the morning with Jacob who is six years one month old at College America. The morning began with a physical assessment and an interview of Jacob, and the afternoon I was able to observe him at play. Jacob is in first grade and he is the oldest child in his family with a younger brother and a younger sister. After doing a physical assessment and an interview with Jacob he appears to be an overall healthy and happy child with no obvious physical or emotional problems. According to Erikson’s developmental stages Jacob is in stage three where Jacob should be developing purpose in his life.
