What is a Huda? Huda: a little creature who likes to giggle and lives in her own la-la land; a one of a kind, happy go lucky extroverted individual who is bubbly, sassy, dramatic, rather manipulative, and also very stubborn. Those are just a few descriptors given about Huda from her mother and sister, and I’m sure most people who know her would call it an apt description. But, in their initial descriptions of my cousin Huda, they left out one important aspect…she has Down Syndrome. Let’s start with the basics. Huda is 18 years old and has lived in Beckley, West Virginia her entire life. She lives with her parents, Afsar and Hina, grandmother, and 2 younger siblings, her 16-year-old sister Nida and 13-year-old brother Ahmed. Huda has Down Syndrome (DS), a genetic condition caused by having an extra copy of chromosome 21 (also known as Trisomy 21), and is considered one of the most common genetic conditions, with 1 in approximately 700 kids being born with DS in the US. The condition is not preventable, and is and marked by developmental delay and intellectual impairment, as well as key recognizable physical traits such as low muscle tone, a flat facial profile, an upward slant to the eyes, small ears, and small stature. Huda displays these physical traits, and the condition also impacts her health, as Huda has high myopia, or far-sightedness, and short ear canals, making her quite sensitive to loud, disturbing sounds.
