By dictionary definition, meta-cognition involves a higher-order thinking that enables understanding, analysis, and control of one’s cognitive processes, especially when engaged in learning. In other words, how has your thinking evolved over the years both academically and professionally? Rather than think about how my thinking has changed, I wanted to expand on how my way of thinking relates to myself in terms of my character. How does my past thinking reflect on my present thinking? Instead I realized I learn better just, by looking back through my notes and relaying the information out loud. Sometimes looking back through my notes did not work for me, especially in math class. Math has always been a hard subject for me to grasp. I figured the only way to successfully study for math was to redo all the practice problems from the notes in order to fully to grasp the concept. In English, History, Science, and Spanish I found review games like Kahoot, Jeopardy and Battleground to be very helpful for studying. I find extra credit, planning out my time, asking for help as motivation. As I mentioned before math has never been my subject and whenever an extra credit opportunity popped up in math I would jump on the opportunity, whether it be five or ten points on a low test/quiz grade I would try my hardest to earn that extra credit. I never felt comfortable with my middle school math teacher because he came off as the strict dictator type and when he picked on you in class you better have the right answer. Ms. Eckberg was always so lenient when it came to her tests and quizzes because she herself admitted the concepts we hard for her to teach and relearn. During my junior year I felt I’d improved dramatically with the help of Ms. Eckberg because I gotten over my fear of asking for help and showed my growth. If I had known I could take high school classes online during my 8th grade year of middle school, I would have more time for college classes and time for myself. When sophomore seminar was eliminated from the 2014-2015 school curriculum I had to find new ways to balance my studies. I truly find joy in doing multiple math problems one after another using strict formulas, because once I know how it’s done, I’ll never forget it. I, unfortunately, did not get that opportunity as well as I should have during these last two years of school. My grades first started to dwindle down slowly when I got diagnosed with pneumonia and I missed a lot of days and class time instruction. What made everything even worse was when my mother underwent spine surgery and tragically faced life threatening complications, she was helpless. i was the only one to be there to take care of her and drive her to her doctors appointments, do the grocery shopping, cleaning, and working for myself all together. One thing on top of the other, made getting caught up in class seem impossible, I would get further behind before I was even au fait with my missing assignments. Thankfully, I had very accommodating teachers and faculty members who were more than willing to work with me to help see me succeed. Having this understanding allows you to convey information in a much more effective manner. Understanding the way I learn is important to the way I can approach problems and solutions. I have learned while in college that the best ways for me to learn are by being able to see or write down something because it is something that I can review and still be able to grasp the concept when it is needed for a test. This strategy was helpful when I was in my English and math class. The second thing that also helps is viewing models because there is something that is tangible which makes it so much easier for me to be able to learn this is the strategy that I used while in my biology. The help of peers has also helped me with my learning process as well because there is not as much pressure when going up and talking to the teacher about what is wrong.
Metacognition is a complex notion that encompasses numerous mental processes in all areas of life. It is often simplistically described as “thinking about thinking.” However, there is no commonly recognized definition of metacognition. In his article “The Power of Reflection”, Stephen Fleming, a well-respected cognitive neuroscientist, agrees with the definition of metacognition given by John Flavell in 1970 as “our ability to evaluate our own thinking” (2). Fleming also accepts Flavell’s proposition that metacognition is “key to educational success”; indeed, the development of metacognitive thinking is vital in learning processes (1). Metacognition is a teachable concept, and has been proven to be crucial in education.
This relates to how Professor Dewey says it is easy to feel like you are understanding with your study resources close to you. Flashcards are fairly effective for me. The repetition makes ideas stick. I usually color code them to so I have something tangible to associate with them as well. My study habits are not absolutely terrible but they could definitely use some work.
Metacognition is basically when you are aware and understand you own thought roccessIn the movie Princes bride, there is one scene where two characters named Westley and Vizzini and the ne character Vizzini shows a really great example of being metacognitive. In this scene, the one character Westley challenges Vizzini to a “Battle of wits”. When Vizzini agrees Westley takes out two wine glasses both full of wine and tell Vizzini that he had just put poison powder into one of the wine glasses and the challenge is for Vizzini to drink from one of the wine glasses that he believes doesn’t have poison in it. The only problem is there is a little bit of poison in both wine glasses and Westley thought ahead because he knew that he was immune to the
Reviewing notes and readings just before class seems to be helpful, as before I used to only do the readings assigned as homework and would never review notes. I’ve tried it, and actually retained a lot more of the information. One thing that I might actually try is to get a visual calendar and have things due one day before they are actually due, so that I will not have any late assignments, and the work will be of an “A” quality.
My personal favorite is to use flash cards. Flashcards are just a form of word association, when you see or hear certain words you immediately start to think of something other than that word. For example, if you say dessert, I think of Apple Pie, then ice cream. Studying with word association works the same way, so if I say President, I think of the current president and the powers of the president. Another way to study effectively is to reward yourself for learning a set of information. For example, when I finish a chapter of note taking and I know the chapter, I watch an episode of Parks and Recreation. This way you take a little break as well as doing what you like to do. Metacognition is the act of thinking about one’s own thought process. My perspective towards writing has without a doubt evolved over the past years of my life. Writing has never really been bothersome for me throughout my life and I believe that I’m an average writer. The best part about writing is there’s always room and opportunities to improve and grow. By analyzing and reviewing others work through their perspective, it has helped me see writing through a more passionate, and meaningful lens. There’s so much that goes into what makes writing what it is. Writing extends far beyond just an introduction paragraph and body paragraphs. Writing is conceptual and the writer needs to be conscious of the audience in which they’re addressing in order to determine the purpose of the content that will be written.
Honestly, I will always have to write things down for me to remember it, so I will continue to write notes and rewrite them to learn and study them for tests/quizzes. I will try to be an auditory learner as well sometimes because of the lectures, what the professor says is also important. In this struggle, I explored different learning practices before homing in on the right tools for me. Repetition is my default approach to mastering new concepts. Repeating thousands of problem types, hundreds of practice tests and more than a few classes has brought me to a point where I better understand math and myself. Understanding my patterns of failure have helped me to build the persistence I need to be successful. In commiserating with my peers, they have discovered a variety of techniques. Reading, highlighting, recitation, practice tests and even tutoring work for other students. Distilled, the key interactions for learning are the ability to ask questions, to practice skills and to receive timely feedback.
In junior High School, things started to turn around for me. Although I was still placed in lower level classes, I developed a love for learning. In the years to come from Junior High to High School, I had a strong urge to make up for lost time. One class I started to excel in was the one I used to have the most trouble with, Mathematics. It seemed as though the once boring and complex equations now seemed meaningful and simple. As I progressed into 8th grade, I was able to advance to normal classes. I felt that the hard work I put in was finally paying of. At this point, I felt that I could handle a higher level. At the end of 8th grade, I took the necessary procedures and tests to try and get into honor - level courses in 9th grade. After taking a summer course of Algebra 1 and several tests I was able to succeed and take the classes. The experience was great. I felt that I was finally going the right direction
