Many times the protagonists become the victims of the story and are eventually defeated. This is the case in Joseph Boyden’s Three Day Road. The protagonist, Xavier Bird, is the victim and is eventually defeated by the powers and doings of the people that he encounters during the war, and also by the uncontrollable forces that act upon him during the course of the war. Ultimately, these two factors overpower him and lead to his emotional defeat.
Costa Rica is a very beautiful and unique place. It was my first time going there and I loved it! It was much different than the United States in ways I didn’t mind or even enjoyed. We saw many things and went many places while we were down there. I am ready to go back again already and do new, exciting things. However, we did a lot while we were down there.

I started this journey filled with nervous excitement and anticipation of traveling without my family to a foreign land. On my return trip I thought of what extravagant lifestyles we Americans live. If I had never traveled to Costa Rica I think I would still be taking things for granted and I learned to appreciate what I have. The Costa Ricans had very little, but they made the absolute best of what they did have. They are very different from us, Americans because our happiness comes from material objects. They were pleased with being able to share their knowledge, culture and language with us. As the Costa Ricans say Pura Vida meaning pure
Prometheus, a Titan in ancient Greek mythology, stole the fire from Zeus, the ruler of all Gods, and gave it to humanity, even when Zeus strictly told him not to. As punishment, Prometheus is bound to a rock. Every day, an eagle swoops in to eat his liver, but Prometheus does not die. His liver regenerates only to be eaten again the following day. Because Prometheus “carried the fire” to humanity, his days are forever filled with torture. Similar to the situation that appears in the Cormac McCarthy’s novel, The Road, the main characters, a man and his son also “carry the fire” for the sake of mankind. “Carrying the fire”, a motif that Cormac McCarthy portrays throughout his novel, The Road, can be used to explain the reasoning behind why
Many people immigrate to Costa Rica for the education and literacy rate there are extraordinary. Perched on top of a foggy mountain, a brown gravel road stretches across the vast landscape of the mountains of Jinotega, Nicaragua that is virtually untouched by humans and fresh with nature. The narrow, gravel path leading through the mountains twists, turns, and hugs the inside of the mountains and leads to the sky. The dense forest surrounding the mountains creates a vast sea of green. The loud white Land-cruiser stands out from the vibrant scenery as the only modern aspect of this remote location. Electric yellow bananas hang
In the 1940s the Beat Generation sprung up and took the nation by storm. Many people in their later teenage years started to become “rebels” to what society thinks. This rebellious lifestyle sparked various different views; those that look up to them, and those that look down upon them. Jack Kerouac plays a major role in this time period pertaining to this lifestyle, authoring many works about it, one being On the Road. He uses the characters in this story to depict the diverse views on the Beatniks. This strong interpretation used throughout the novel sets the stage for many other authors writing on behalf of the Beat Generation. The characters he uses in this
In my travels of the world I have found myself immersed in many cultures and varieties of ethnicity; I have been very fortunate to live in a day and age where such communication and experience is possible in one lifetime. I have seen La Cathedral de Notre Dame, the Statue of Liberty, the home of Da Vinci, and so many more wonderfully spiritual and historic monuments. Yet still I can say with the utmost certainty that no location has left such a lasting impact on my soul as the quaint, simple country of Costa Rica. Although many places have penetrated me with a sense of what the majestic earth and her inhabitants are capable of and have forced me to question whether or not anything is beyond the grasp of human ingenuity, none have brought

A few years ago, my family and I traveled to Puerto Rico for winter break vacation. Our resort was located on an island off of the mainland so it was necessary that we take a boatride. The island was beautiful and desolate. It was full of beaches, fields, and mountains and our stay was filled with exploring the island. For the first few days, I explored the island primarily with my dad. In the middle of the island lay the main attraction, a large, hikeable mountain. We climbed to the top until we reached the peak. We sat down at a gazebo and enjoyed the 360 degree views of the island.
Picture a road, it’s smooth with no pot holes or bumps, the paint that marks the middle and edges glows bright in the sunlight. Tall green trees stand sentinel on one side, on the other, an endless field of wildflowers, one in every color. If you were to stand in the middle of this road and look down it till it fades into the horizon, because it does not yet have any turns, you would see only endless possibility. This road is you education, this is what your road looked like when you began kinagardan, beautiful and perfect, but from that moment on everything you have done has affected your road.
Costa Rica, meaning Rich Coast, can attribute its assortment of wildlife and natural wonders to its assorted geography, ecological zones, and microclimates. Costa Rica 's geography shows a record of disaster, with earthquakes, floods, and volcanoes forming the scene today. A mixture of mountains, beaches, rivers, and powerful waterfalls shape the smaller country at 19,653 square miles. (Geography of Costa Rica, 2014) Found just 10 degrees north of the equator, Costa Rica appreciates a hot climate compared to a sunny tropical paradise. Mountains and rain forests mixed with the two oceans surrounding the country create it’s four main geographical areas: The Tropical Lowlands, the Northern Central Plains, the Central Valley, and the Northwest Peninsula. (Geography of Costa Rica, 2014) Costa Rica also has at least 60 volcanoes, five of which
I view the calmer life pace as an attractive Costa Rican trait, and one element that persuades many Americans seeking relaxation to vacation or immigrate
