She was a pioneering female pilot, determined and independent and a supporter of women's rights. In 1908, Amelia saw her first airplane at a state fair, but she wasn’t very impressed. It was only six years earlier that the Wright brothers made their first flight at Kittyhawk, North Carolina. She wanted to be a doctor and enrolled in pre-medical program at Columbia University but left after a year to live with her parents who recently got back together after separating.
